Sales and leadership consultant Joe Calamusa IV will be the featured speaker at this month’s Trussville Area Chamber of Commerce luncheon, sponsored by The Jimmie Hale Mission, on Nov. 15 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Trussville Civic Center.

Calamusa serves as the managing director of the University of Alabama Sales Program and teaches professional selling at the UA Culverhouse College of Commerce. In addition, he is a founding partner of Sales & Leadership Development Group (SLDG), founded by UA professors to train and consult businesses in the areas of sales, marketing, talent and leadership.

The Birmingham native says he’s looking forward to stepping out of the classroom and corporate setting to speak to Trussville business and community leaders for the first time at a chamber event.

“The ultimate opportunity for me is to reach people from every different type of background that are connected by their shared geography. … Usually you have really great energy at these type of events because the energy of the community tends to spill over into the energy of the community meetings,” Calamusa said. “[Trussville] has become a pocket in that northeast area where it has its own sustainable growth over the last 20 years. Anytime you’re speaking to a growing community, it means you’re speaking to a vibrant community.”

Calamusa said he plans to discuss with Trussville leaders the three aspects of effective communication: message, method and medium. He says he chose the topic because it is specific, yet broad enough to encompass the diverse backgrounds of chamber members to apply his advice professionally and personally.

He said he will discuss how to turn an idea of something a company wants to communicate into a message to deliver to an audience and to look at the various methods available such as instructional messages, exclamation statements, inspirational messages or dialogue.

Choosing the medium to deliver the message is also part of the process, as Calamusa will cover a range of mediums from face-to-face communication and phone to email, text messaging and social media.

Cost for the luncheon is $17. A processing fee is added if paid by credit or debit card. Registration is available online at trussvillechamber.com through noon on Tuesday, Nov. 13, or reservations can be made by emailing June Matthews at june.mathews@trussvillechamber.com.

The address for the Trussville Civic Center is 5381 Trussville-Clay Road.
