The Arts Council of the Trussville Area (ACTA) will close its regular season with a 23-member cast in the production of Louisa May Alcott’s enduring classic, “Little Women.” 2019 marks 150 years of continued popularity since the book was originally published as two volumes released in 1868 and 1869.

The plot focuses on four teenaged sisters and their mother as they support one another while their father is engaged in war efforts. Whether it’s the domestically inclined Meg, the socially aspiring Amy, the timidly reserved Beth or the outspoken tomboy Jo, there is at least one sister with whom anyone can identify. The storyline unfolds as the characters develop their individual uniqueness while balancing their familial connections.

“[Little Women] is very relatable because it’s a sweet, sweet story about families who stick together and support one another,” said Trussville resident Suellen Wilkins, who will serve as director for the play.

“Jo was one of the first feminists. She’s a strong-headed young woman who wanted to go her own way. She thought her life and work would be everything until she finds love.”

Involved with ACTA since its inception in 1986, Wilkins enjoys watching people discover and develop their passion for the stage.

“People audition that have never done any type of acting before. You can see that they’re timid at first, but then they gain confidence. Even if you don’t get the part, auditions are a great experience. They get more comfortable when they’re asked to reread something or sing something again. Once you get on stage, you’re hooked.”

Benefits of community theaters also extend to audience members, according to Wilkins. “Many people can’t afford the $50 or $60 tickets for a show at the BJCC. For $10 or $12, this gives people an affordable way to experience live theater.”

Wilkins noted that ACTA creates their production lineup with all ages in mind. “Other theaters can be a little on the edge, but ACTA aims to be family-friendly.”

Given that the theater’s most recent production of “Cheaper by the Dozen” sold out, those interested in attending a performance of Little Women are encouraged to purchase tickets early.

Performances will run April 18-20 and 26-28. ACTA Theatre is located at 255 Parkway Drive. Contact info@actatheater.com or 655-3902 for more information. Visit ACTAtheater.com for show times or to purchase tickets online.
