Hewitt-Trussville Middle School student Ashley Rodgers’s drawing, “Parents,” was selected for the yearlong Alabama State Department of Education Student Exhibition. Ashley is a seventh grader at Hewitt-Trussville Middle School, where she takes art with Kristin Meriam-Bloodworth.

Ashley is one of only 20 students from all over the state to be chosen for the art show. The drawing is a double portrait of the artist’s parents, Cathy and Joe Rodgers. In honor of the Alabama Bicentennial, Ashley wrote an essay to accompany the portrait, telling the story of her adoption from China, and how glad she is to be an Alabamian thanks to her parents.

Student Sam McMahon also had her artwork on display at the State Superintendent’s Art Exhibition.

Submitted by Trussville City Schools.
