The Bible Reading Marathon is coming to Trussville.

The event is scheduled to begin Thursday, May 5 at 8 a.m. and conclude at approximately 6 p.m. Sunday, May 8. It will take place in the park across Main Street from Trussville City Hall and behind Holy Cross Episcopal Church. Area churches and citizens may participate in this event.

The Birmingham-area Bible Reading Marathon is a branch of the National Bible Reading Marathon that takes place on the steps of the United States Capitol for 90 consecutive hours each year, exhorting the nation to return to God’s precepts. The event coincides with the National Day of Prayer, a time to pray for the seven centers of influence: government, church, military, family, education, media arts and business.

The Trussville City Council at its Jan. 28, 2020, meeting passed a proclamation recognizing the event. The proclamation states that the city council recites the Pledge of Allegiance at the beginning of each meeting, demonstrating “our loyalty to God and Country in repeating the phrase ‘one nation, under God.’”

The event is open to all denominations, races, creeds and colors with the objective of reading the Bible from Genesis to Revelations. Each participant will read for a 15-minute time period, until the reading of the Bible is completed in 82 hours. People of all ages are welcome to read.

First Baptist Church Pastor Buddy Champion said in 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the event that he is confident that this event will be a blessing to Trussville and that many local churchgoers will participate.

“The Bible gives us encouragement, direction and at times correction in our lives,” Champion said. “As we all remember that God’s Word serves as our authority then our lives are transformed for the better. The Bible provides life for us as we live a world that at times is filled with discord and difficulties.”

Champion said any city will always benefit from a reminder of God’s presence and ultimate will in its resident’s lives.

“Trussville is a great place to live and anything that draws our relationships closer together will be beneficial,” Champion said.
