Women in Business: Dr. Christy Jebeles Savage - Great Smiles Orthodontics – Trussville
If you ask the owner and founder of Great Smiles Orthodontics, Dr. Christy Savage, what she does, she’ll tell you, “my business is to create beautiful, healthy smiles.”
Dr. Savage has known since she was a teenager that she wanted to be an orthodontist.
“I first became interested in orthodontics when I had my own braces,” she said. “Before I had braces I was really ashamed to smile. I had buckteeth. I had crowded teeth. I was just really self-conscious. Getting braces transformed my smile...When I got them off I was confident. I was engaging. So, I knew at an early age that I wanted to provide that same experience for others. I wanted to be able to change someone’s self-esteem in a positive way.”
Dr. Savage was so dedicated to this mission that she became the first woman to complete a residency in orthodontics at the UAB School of Dentistry. She went on to become the first woman to serve as the president of the Alabama Association of Orthodontists and the Alabama Orthodontic Alumni Association.
Being the first woman to complete the orthodontics residency at UAB meant that she didn’t have many female mentors. She helps to change that for younger generations by inviting students at all levels to shadow her as she works. This is just one of the ways that she gives back to the community.
Her advice to other young and aspiring professionals is to plan early for your success, keep learning, honing your craft, and always be improving.
As a mother of three, Dr. Savage understands the importance of time management and work.
