More than 3,500 members of the Daughters of the American Revolution convened in the nation’s capital in June for the 127th Continental Congress, the service organization’s annual meeting.

The weeklong convention consisted of business sessions, committee meetings and social functions, and was topped off with formal evening ceremonies at which national DAR award winners were honored. In attendance from the Lily of the Cahaba chapter, based in Hoover, were past Vice Regent General and Organizing Chapter Regent Connie Grund, Chapter Regent Kaye Sutley, Chapter 1st Vice Regent Shelby Bailey, Chapter 2nd Vice Regent Suzy Koski, Honorary Chapter Regent Susan Moore, Chapter Registrar Sally Woolley and Marla McCully.

Sutley and Koski attended and helped with registration at the Patriotism Luncheon. Other attendees enjoyed the evening events and tours of the newly renovated DAR Museum.

The opening night ceremony featured award-winning documentary filmmaker Lynn Novick as keynote speaker, who was also awarded the DAR Media and Entertainment Award. The national defense night ceremony, honoring the nation’s military personnel and veterans, welcomed Rear Adm. Joseph M. Vojvodich, deputy for mission support for the U.S. Coast Guard, as keynote speaker.

Other national awards were handed out during the week to outstanding individuals celebrating excellence in historic preservation, education and patriotism. Grund was recognized as a retiring national vice president general.

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was founded in 1890 to promote historic preservation, education and patriotism. Its members are descended from the patriots who won American independence during the Revolutionary War.
