A new restaurant and entertainment venue has opened on the edge of Trussville, featuring live music, a large projector for game days and “food for the soul.”

Ruth’s Place, owned by Birmingham native Nett Bibb and family-operated, opened its doors in late 2018 at 2404 Derby Parkway, off Interstate 459.

Marketed as “Great Food. Great Entertainment,” the lounge-like atmosphere features leather bucket seats at some of its tables and can seat more than 120 in its downstairs area, where the stage and high bar are located, with additional seating and a bar upstairs.

Weekly live entertainment varies from jazz to comedy, special events and karaoke Thursday nights at 7:30 p.m.

The menu includes grilled steaks and seafood options of catfish, tilapia, grilled salmon and shrimp. Five flavors of wings highlight the appetizer menu, while the “Food for the Soul” portion of the menu features meat-and-two options of baked chicken, fried chicken, pork chops, beef tips and rice, oxtails or a three-piece veggie plate.

“For a restaurant, it really surprises you how good it is. Picture Grandma’s cooking in a fine dining restaurant,” Ruth’s Place public relations representative Roderick Abernathy said.

Online reviews and Abernathy all say a must try is Ruth’s Signature Cornbread. The golden cornbread, which can be ordered by the dozen, is a secret recipe that only select family members know, passed down from the owner’s mother, Ruth.

“It’s a moist, sweet cornbread. It’s really different. It’s something you have to taste,” Abernathy said.

Ruth’s Place offers various 8-ounce, hand-patted hamburger options, a chicken club, hickory smoked chicken sandwich, a Philly steak, pulled pork with a special sauce or shrimp po’ boys. Kids’ meals are also available.

Beverage choices rage from tea and homemade lemonade to classic cocktails.

If the signature cornbread or lemonade isn’t enough to meet a sweet tooth, Ruth’s Place offers homemade pound cake, banana pudding and German chocolate cake for dessert.

Ruth’s Place opens at 10:30 a.m. Monday through Saturday, closing at 9 p.m. on weeknights and 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Sunday’s hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Starting Feb. 1 Ruth's will be closed on Mondays.

In addition to dining in, orders can be called in for takeout by calling 838-0460. The restaurant began offering catering over the holidays.
