With more than 115 separate sales tickets and approximately 300 visitors to the store, Rebecca Brown has declared the Aug. 11 grand opening of her baby and children’s boutique in Trussville a success.

The plan to open a baby boutique had been stirring in Brown for a few years. To gain experience in business management and develop insight into customer preferences, Brown first tested the waters with an online store. That experience provided the confidence to transition to a brick-and-mortar location.

Rebecca Brown’s — A Baby and Children’s Boutique is nestled just behind the current Borella’s Automotive on Main Street in Trussville. Brown’s husband, Kyle, gutted the space in preparation for installation of vertical, wide plank whitewash panels on the walls.

“This has been great. We’d been looking forward to this for a few years,” Kyle Brown said.

As the remodel of the space progressed, Brown began curating a collection of items to match the buying trends she’d observed online. By opening day, the 800-square-foot space offered boutique baby items from more than a dozen specialty brands.

While Brown resides in Homewood, she chose to open her store in Trussville due to her history here.

“I love Trussville because it has a special place in my heart. I grew up here, graduated from high school here and taught school here. My parents still live here. So Trussville is the perfect fit for the shop,” Brown said.

Before focusing on the boutique full time, Brown was a sixth-grade science teacher at HTMS.

“I was a little nervous leaving teaching because of the social aspect. But I’ve met so many new people, and I’ve loved it,” she said.

Though she only recently opened, Brown had to order a second shipment of Honey Bee Tees, based out of Dothan, to replenish several styles that sold out quickly. Pajamas and bamboo clothing have also been strong sellers.

Brown attributed the increasing popularity in bamboo clothing of recent years due to how well it wears and washes, as well as the softness of the fabric. In addition to Angel Dear and Kickee Pants, items from the Milkbarn clothing line have also been popular with guests.

Vive La Fete, Copper Pearl, Sweet Dreams, Anavini, Petit Ami, The Bailey Boys, Prodoh and Squiggles are additional brand names that Brown was sure to include the store’s collection.

“I also have a lot of heirlooms and christening gowns that have been really popular because they can be hard to find,” Brown said.

In addition to dress, sleep and play clothing items, Rebecca Brown’s also offers items such as burp cloths, bath cloths, blankets and cloth diapers — all of which can be monogrammed and available for pickup in about 10 days’ time.

Positioned just a few short steps away from Edgar’s Bakery, Brown is considering extended hours to match the eatery’s hours once it opens.

Currently, store hours for Rebecca Brown’s are 10 a.m  to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
