Trussville native Scott Myers, director of the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, will return to his hometown May 17 to share stories of some of Alabama’s greatest sports legends during the monthly Trussville Area Chamber of Commerce luncheon.

The luncheon, sponsored by Wilbur Corporation, will begin at 11:30 a.m. at the Trussville Civic Center, 5381 Trussville-Clay Road.

“It’s always a pleasure to come back and visit. I’m really looking forward to it,” said Myers, a 1985 Hewitt-Trussville grad. “Being a [grades]1-12 student there was a blessing in my life. It’s a wonderful place.”

Myers, who played defensive back and quarterback for the Huskies before playing defensive back at Samford University, is in his 10th year as director of ASHOF. The museum is located in a three-story, 33,000-square-foot building adjacent to the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex downtown, and houses more than 5,000 pieces of memorabilia.

“We’re very fortunate in the state of Alabama to have what is widely regarded as one of the finest sports hall of fames in the country,” Myers said. “We don’t have as many opportunities to show that off to the residents of the state as we’d like, so we always enjoy being able to tell the story about our inductees and the memorabilia set up throughout the museum.”

The Hall of Fame’s 353 inductees span across more than a dozen sports.

“From top to bottom, it’s the finest gathering of athletes anywhere in the world,” Myers said.

In addition to honoring the state’s sports greats and preserving the history of their deeds and accomplishments, the ASHOF coordinates two other programs, which Myers said he plans to share with Trussville chamber members. One is the Bryant-Jordan Student-Athlete Scholarship Program, which awards nearly $1 million of scholarships each year to student-athletes at Class 1A-7A schools.

The other is the Birmingham Athletic Partnership, which is led by Toney Pugh, a former HTHS assistant football coach and Clay-Chalkville High School’s first head football coach. Currently in its 16th year, the Birmingham Athletic Partnership serves as a booster club program for the Birmingham City Schools for all extracurricular activities.

The Alabama Sports Hall of Fame is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is closed Saturday and Sunday.

Each month, the chamber luncheon begins with a 30-minute network development time during which members and guests can network and exchange business cards with the estimated 80-100 individuals expected to attend. After lunch, the chamber will honor its monthly Customer Service Award winners. Door prizes will also be given away.

To register, visit TrussvilleChamber.com, or contact June Mathews by phone at 655-7535 or email june.mathews@trussvillechamber.com. Cost for the luncheon is $17, with a processing fee if you pay by credit card. Online registration is closed at midnight on Monday, May 14, but the chamber office will accept registration by phone until noon Tuesday, May 15. All non-members must pay in advance.
