Here's a look back at the last week of Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school athletics.
BASKETBALL
The Clay-Chalkville girls basketball team began play two weeks ago on Monday with a trip to Leeds. The Lady Cougars picked up a 53-37 win over the home team and were led by Makaila Dillard’s 13 points and Tamyia Muse added 11 points.
On that Thursday, Pinson Valley’s boys picked up an 84-55 win over Gadsden City. Jo Jo James led the way with 18 points, 10 rebounds and three assists on the night. Greedy Wiliams filled the stat sheet as well, going for 14 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. Terry Coner added 12 points and six assists, while Caleb White had 12 points, three assists and two steals. BJ Diakite crashed the glass all game, pulling down 11 boards to go along with seven points.
Pinson Valley’s girls lost a pair of games during the week, suffering a 65-39 loss to Wenonah and a 60-26 defeat to Gadsden City.
Also on Thursday, the Clay-Chalkville boys began play in the Oak Mountain Invite with a 56-40 win over Southside-Gadsden. Isiah Daniel was the top scorer with 23 points, while Donovan Shangase added 13 points and six assists for the Cougars.
On Friday, Amiya Payne scored her 2,000th career point in Hewitt-Trussville’s 58-52 win over Eufaula in Hoover’s Big Orange Classic. She scored 24 points to go along with eight rebounds and three steals in the game. Jordan Hunter added 12 points, five rebounds, six assists and four steals for the Lady Huskies.
Also on Friday, Clay-Chalkville’s boys earned a significant 56-39 win over Oak Mountain in the semifinals of the Oak Mountain Invite. Oak Mountain’s Noah Young led all scorers with 12 points, but Shangase and Jonathan Harris each scored 11 points for the Cougars. Clay’s Skylar Smith and Oak Mountain’s Will Shaver each scored 10.
The Lady Huskies knocked off Auburn 49-42 to wrap up play in the Big Orange Classic on Saturday.
Clay-Chalkville finished off the Oak Mountain Invite championship with a 53-39 over Class 7A No. 2 Spain Park on Saturday. Shangase exploded for 23 points, with Daniel adding 12 points and Harris going for 11 points. Cam Crawford led Spain Park with 11 points.
Last Monday, the Pinson Valley girls suffered a 48-37 loss to Pelham.
On Tuesday, Hewitt-Trussville swept Deshler. The Lady Huskies earned a 74-53 win, as Payne went for 21 points and eight rebounds to lead the way. Hunter had 18 points and three rebounds. Sara Phillips knocked down four 3-pointers for 12 points. Londyn Johnson and Hooks each finished with eight points. The boys earned a 74-50 win as well.
WRESTLING
The Hewitt-Trussville wrestling team has been in action recently as well. On Dec. 15, the Huskies took down Jackson-Olin 78-6 and beat Tuscaloosa County 76-0. Two days later, the Huskies fell to McAdory 40-33. On Dec. 18, Hewitt-Trussville beat Mountain Brook 36-9.
Last Saturday, the Huskies picked up three wins at the Hewitt Husky Christmas Duals. Hewitt beat Auburn 72-9, Huntsville 45-21 and Thompson 33-32.
Last Tuesday, the Huskies beat Fairhope 73-6 and knocked off Vestavia Hills 78-0.
