The Hewitt-Trussville High School track and field boys and girls teams finished second in the Class 7A state outdoor meet Saturday, May 1, 2021, in Gulf Shores.
Here's a look back at the last week of Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school athletics.
TRACK AND FIELD
The local track and field teams competed in the outdoor state meet last weekend in Gulf Shores. The Hewitt-Trussville boys and girls each finished second in Class 7A, while the Clay-Chalkville boys were fifth in 6A.
For Hewitt-Trussville, Julian Collins won the long jump competition, Maci Mills won the 800-meter run, Kelsey Martin prevailed in long jump and Lea Townsend won the shot put.
Reaching the podium for the Huskies were Collins (third in 100-meter dash and triple jump), the boys 4x800-meter relay team (third), Tanveer Raza (second in shot put), Martin (third in 200, second in 400 and second in triple jump), Townsend (third in discus) and Haleigh Chambers (third in javelin).
Clay-Chalkville had several impressive performances on the boys side. The Cougars 4x100-meter relay team claimed the top prize. Marquarius White was second in the 100- and 200-meter dashes and Jaylen Mbakwe finished third in the 100.
BASEBALL
The Hewitt-Trussville baseball team is in to the second round of the Class 7A playoffs after sweeping Grissom last Friday. The Huskies won 3-2 and 6-3 in a pair of ball games that went down to the wire.
In the first game, the Huskies got a great pitching performance from Riley Quick, who went all seven innings and allowed two runs on six hits, with nine strikeouts. Matt Miller drove in two of the three runs, with a two-run hit that tied the game at 2-2. A throwing error on a bunt allowed the Huskies to win the game in the seventh.
The 6-3 victory in the second game came in eight innings. After being tied 3-3 through seven innings, the Huskies put up three in the eighth to win. Skylar Jones went the full distance, allowing three runs on five hits with 11 strikeouts. Jackson Holland hit the go-ahead sacrifice fly and finished with two RBIs in the game.
This weekend, Hewitt-Trussville will host Hoover in the 7A quarterfinals. A Friday doubleheader begins at 4:30 p.m., with a third game set for 1 p.m. Saturday.
SOFTBALL
Last Monday, the Pinson Valley softball team fell to Hayden 12-2. On Tuesday, Clay-Chalkville fell to Homewood 11-1 and Pinson Valley fell to Moody 19-3. McKenzie Cagle hit a home run and drove in all three runs for the Indians.
Hewitt-Trussville celebrated senior night Tuesday, beating Tuscaloosa County 13-4. Madi Mitchell and Meredith Whitt hit homers for the Huskies. Anyce Harvey tallied three hits and drove in a run, while Crystal Maze drove in two runs. Tori Hyde went the distance, allowing four runs (three runs) on seven hits in seven innings.
Clay-Chalkville toppled Ramsay 12-2 on Thursday. Akiya Dunning and Julia Petty hit home runs for the Cougars and Petty struck out 10 batters in four hitless innings. LaDonna Scott went 4-for-5 with a triple and three RBIs, while Destinee Banks tallied three hits and drove in a run.
Pinson Valley fell to Shades Valley 5-2 on Thursday.
The area tournaments are set to be played this week.
SOCCER
The Clay-Chalkville boys soccer team fell to Homewood 11-1 in the second round of the Class 6A playoffs last Monday.
On Tuesday, Pinson Valley’s boys fell to Mountain Brook in the second round of the 6A playoffs.
GOLF
The Hewitt-Trussville boys golf team finished second at the Class 7A, Section 3 tournament last Monday at the Country Club of Birmingham. Stuart Dixon shot a 3-under 67 to lead the Huskies, with Ethan Hacker and Cole Davidson each firing rounds of 73. Austin Freeman shot an 81.
Hewitt-Trussville’s girls finished second in the Section 3 tournament on Tuesday at Highland Park. After tying with Spain Park with a team score of 235, Spain Park edged the Huskies in a one-hole playoff. Molly Davidson was the low medalist, firing a 1-over par 71 on the day. Gracie Davidson and Kiersten Riggins each shot 82 and Aubrey Payne finished at 89. The Huskies will play in the sub-state tournament this week.
