Here's a look back at the last week of Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school athletics.
BASKETBALL
The high school basketball playoffs began last week.
On Monday, the Clay-Chalkville girls had their season come to an end at Hartselle in the Class 6A sub-regional round, as the Lady Cougars fell 52-41. It was an impressive showing for Clay against one of the top teams in the state. Click here for the full recap of the contest.
On Tuesday, the Pinson Valley boys pushed past Hartselle 66-57, while Clay’s boys had their season ended by Cullman in a 68-50 loss in the 6A sub-regional round. Click here for the story of those games.
The Hewitt-Trussville girls dominated Sparkman in the Class 7A Northeast Regional semifinal Wednesday. The Lady Huskies advanced to the regional final for the third time in the last four years. Click here for the recap of the game.
Pinson Valley’s boys fell short Friday, falling to Scottsboro 79-60 in the 6A Northwest Regional semifinal. Scottsboro jumped out ahead early and Pinson was never able to fully recover, as the Indians trailed 22-6 after a quarter of play. The Indians played better in the second quarter but still trailed 39-23 at halftime.
Scottsboro jumped out ahead again in the third quarter and that proved to be too much. Caleb White finished with 24 points to lead the Indians, as he also picked up 5 steals. Terry Coner went for 20 points and 4 steals as well.
Pinson Valley ended the season with a 25-7 record.
WRESTLING
The Hewitt-Trussville wrestling team finished its season over the weekend at the state tournament in Huntsville.
Hewitt-Trussville finished third in the Class 7A division, accumulating 106.5 points. It was the second consecutive top-three finish at stte for the Huskies.
Lucas Reaves won the state title at 152 pounds. Reaves opened the event with over Gabriel Emery of Grissom. In the semifinals, Reaves defeated Paxton Miller of Thompson. In the championship match, Reaves pinned Manny Merrero of Bob Jones. Reaves scored 22.5 team points over the weekend.
Hunter Jones took home the state title at 195 pounds. Jones opened with a win over Tank Mays of Bob Jones. In the semifinals, Jones pinned Trace Gallman of Central-Phenix City. Jones wrapped up the title with a win over Todd Whitmire of Huntsville. Jones scored 23 team points over the weekend.
Logan Reaves closed out his high school career with a second-place finish at 145 pounds. He opened the event by pinning Ian Addison of Hoover. In the semifinal round, Reaves pinned Kyle Fontenot of Smiths Station. Reaves dropped the championship match to James Latona of Thompson.
Dalton Zimmerman won his consolation finals match on Saturday to finish in third place at 126 pounds. Clark Box earned eight team points and placed fourth at 106. Andrew Shelton scored eight team points and placed 4th at 160. Chris Hawkins scored nine team points and placed 4th at 220.

BASEBALL
The local baseball teams opened up their seasons over the weekend.
Hewitt-Trussville notched a pair of wins, beating Sardis 10-0 and Southside-Gadsden 6-2. Riley Quick shut out Sardis, allowing just 1 hit and striking out 11 over 6 innings of work. Baker Green was stellar in his start against Southside, allowing 2 hits and striking out 8 over 5 2/3 innings. Eayn Thomas earned a save, pitching 1 1/3 innings with 3 strikeouts in the Southside game. For the day, Kurt Kizer led the Huskies with 4 hits and 4 runs batted in. Jack Ollis had 3 hits and 3 RBIs. Matt Miller posted 3 hits as well.
Clay-Chalkville dropped its season opener to Springville 10-9 in a tightly contested game. For the Cougars, Tyler Griffin drove in 3 runs and Josh Ervin knocked in a pair. Kenny Glover finished with 3 hits and an RBI, while Kevin Hurley drove in a run as well. Javen Hunter got 2 hits and scored three times. PJ Trammell finished with 2 hits as well.
Pinson Valley began the season with a 14-13 win over Minor and a 10-1 loss to Etowah.
SOFTBALL
The Hewitt-Trussville softball team opened up the season last Thursday with a 10-5 win over Wetumpka. The game was tied 4-4 entering the seventh inning, before the Huskies broke the game open with six runs in the frame. Kenleigh Cahalan drove in one on a double, Riley Tyree knocked in another with a hit, Emily Onofry registered one of her three runs batted in on a hit and Olivia Faggard punctuated the big inning with a three-run home run.
Hannah Dorsett went 3-for-5 out of the leadoff spot and scored a run, while Tyree also tallied three hits, an RBI and two runs scored. Sarah Hindman pitched six innings, allowing four runs (two earned) and earning the win.
Hewitt-Trussville played two games Friday to open up the Sidney Cooper Invitational, hosted by Central at the South Commons Softball Complex in Columbus, Georgia. The Huskies tied with Spanish Fort 2-2 and beat Bob Jones 9-1.
In the Spanish Fort game, Kate Hicks went 6 innings and allowed 2 unearned runs on 3 hits. The Huskies broke out the bats in the next game. Riley Rudick and Cahalan each finished 4-for-4 and combined for 5 RBIs. Tyree drove in 2 more runs, while Dorsett posted 3 hits, an RBI and 3 runs. Zaylen Tucker pitched well, allowing 1 run on 3 hits in 5 innings, striking out 8.
The Huskies played three more times Saturday, beginning with an 11-4 loss to a strong Athens team. Cahalan homered twice in that game and drove in 4, while Dorsett went 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored.
The Huskies rebounded with two more wins, beating Tallassee 13-6 and Smiths Station 11-2 to wrap up the weekend. Against Tallassee, Cahalan led the team with 3 hits and 3 RBIs. Dorsett, Tyree and Hindman each drove in a pair of runs. Rudick finished with 3 hits and Onofry notched a pair of hits and an RBI. Hindman also threw 2 innings, allowing an unearned run.
In the Smiths win, Cahalan, Tyree and Chaney Peters each knocked in a pair. Gracie Reeves posted 3 hits and scored twice, while Faggard went 6 innings and allowed 1 run on 5 hits.
SOCCER
Last Tuesday, the Pinson Valley boys soccer team fell to Hoover 3-0. Hewitt-Trussville’s boys also suffered a 3-0 loss to Homewood.
On Wednesday, the Hewitt-Trussville girls knocked off Mountain Brook 2-0. Libby Armstrong scored the game’s opening goal, doing so off an assist from Taylor Doss. Katie Harbin scored the second goal of the contest off a corner from Jocelyn Davis.
On Friday night, the Hewitt girls notched an impressive 4-1 win over Hoover.
TENNIS
The Hewitt-Trussville girls tennis team knocked off Oak Mountain 8-1 on Wednesday. The Huskies won five of the six singles matches. Yasmin Fisher won 8-2 at No. 2 singles, AnnaBeth Hill won 8-2 at No. 3 and Anna Blake won 8-2 in No. 4. Talia Talley outlasted her opponent 9-7 at No. 5 and Riley Edwards won 8-6 in No. 6.
Isabella Hall and Hill won 8-4 in No. 1 doubles, Fisher and Blake won 8-1 in No. 2, and Talley and Sarah Kate Smith won 8-3 at No. 3.
