Here's a look back at the last week of Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school athletics.
BASKETBALL
The Clay-Chalkville girls basketball team began play in the Class 6A, Area 12 tournament last Monday with a 55-37 win over Pinson Valley. Brooklyn Phillips and Kamoriah Gaines each scored 14 points to lead the team, while Kameron Sanders scored 11 points herself.
Pinson Valley and Clay-Chalkville’s boys teams advanced into the sub-regional round of the playoffs with wins Tuesday evening in the opening round of the Class 6A, Area 12 tournament. Clay’s boys beat Mortimer Jordan 52-31 to make the playoffs in Chris Richardson’s first season as head coach. For the Cougars, Jalen Hudson led the way with 9 points, while DaVon Cheatham and Cedric Dixon each finished with 8 points.
Pinson beat Gardendale 76-50 in the area tournament to advance to the finals. Caleb White led the way with 21 points, 5 assists and 8 steals. Caleb White went for 17 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists. Terry Coner finished with 15 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists as well.
Hewitt-Trussville’s girls punched their ticket to the regional tournament with a 55-29 win over Gadsden City on Tuesday in the opening round of the Class 7A, Area 6 tournament. D’yona Jones led the Lady Huskies with 15 points on the night, while April Hooks and Jordan Hunter each tallied 13 points and combined for 11 rebounds.
Clay-Chalkville’s girls suffered a 68-31 loss to Mortimer Jordan in the Area 12 tournament final Wednesday evening, but the Lady Cougars will still advance to the sub-regional round of the playoffs this week.
Hewitt-Trussville’s boys had their season ended by Vestavia Hills on Wednesday night in the opening round of the Class 7A, Area 6 tournament, as the Rebels defeated the Huskies 78-55. Hewitt finished the year with a mark of 8-22.
Pinson Valley earned a hard-fought 54-50 win over Clay-Chalkville on Thursday night in the area tournament final. Coner led the Indians with 17 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists. Isaiah Sims went for 15 points, 3 rebounds and 3 steals. Caleb White finished with 11 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals as well.
The playoffs begin this week. Clay-Chalkville’s boys and girls and the Pinson Valley boys will be playing in the 6A sub-regional round. Clay’s girls travel to Hartselle on Monday, while Pinson Valley hosts Hartselle and Clay-Chalkville’s boys travel to Cullman on Tuesday. Hewitt-Trussville’s girls play Sparkman in the Northeast Regional tournament at Jacksonville State on Wednesday.
WRESTLING
The Hewitt-Trussville wrestling team finished as the runner-up in the Class 7A North Super Section tournament over the weekend. The Huskies will be sending 10 wrestlers to the state tournament this week in Huntsville.
SOCCER
The Hewitt-Trussville girls soccer team fell to Chelsea 1-0 last Tuesday, as Chelsea broke a scoreless tie in the second half to win the contest. The same night, Hewitt’s boys earned a 2-2 draw with Sparkman.
On Thursday, the Pinson Valley boys fell to Helena 2-0.
Hewitt-Trussville’s boys traveled to Hoover on Friday and left with a 1-1 draw.
The Hewitt girls played two games in the Southern Shootout on Friday, beating Cullman 4-0 and losing to Fairhope 1-0. In the Cullman win, Julia Farris opened the scoring on a goal assisted by Katie Harbin. Libby Armstrong scored the second and third goals, with the third coming from an assist by Avery Huffstutler. Ella Allen scored the fourth goal of the contest.
Pinson Valley fell to Leeds 3-1 on Friday, surrendering two goals in the second half after the game was tied 1-1 at the half.
On Saturday, the Hewitt-Trussville girls rebounded with a 5-1 win over St. Paul’s, while the Pinson Valley boys fell to Chelsea 2-1.
