Here's a look back at the last week of Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school athletics.
BASKETBALL
The local basketball teams began the final week of regular season play last Tuesday.
Hewitt-Trussville’s girls hosted Plainview and earned a 54-43 win over the visiting Bears. D’yona Jones and Jordan Hunter each led the team with 16 points. Jones tallied 9 rebounds, while Hunter also registered 5 assists and 4 steals. Audre Benson joined them in double figures with 11 points of her own.
Hewitt’s boys hosted Mountain Brook and played the top-ranked in Class 6A Spartans tough, but fell 57-50. Ray Rolley led all scorers with 26 points in the contest.
Clay-Chalkville earned a home sweep of Shades Valley on Tuesday as well. The Lady Cougars dominated to the tune of a 55-33 victory. Kamoriah Gaines poured in 19 points and Kameron Sanders joined her in double digits with 16 points. Brooklyn Phillips scored 8 points as well.
Clay’s boys survived the Mounties, hanging on for a 52-50 win. Jalen Hudson had 16 points in the game to lead the Cougars, while Tiawan Hardy had 13 poitns and DaVon Cheatham finished with 8 points.
Hewitt-Trussville’s basketball teams closed out the regular season at home Friday evening. The Lady Huskies notched an impressive win over Mortimer Jordan, beating the No. 2 team in Class 6A 51-38.
In the boys game, the Huskies hosted Clay-Chalkville for the first time in nearly five years, with Hewitt winning 48-43. Click here to read the story on the renwing of the longtime rivalry.
Area tournaments will be held this week. Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley will play in the Class 6A, Area 12 tournaments, with the girls at Mortimer Jordan on Monday and Wednesday, with the boys at Pinson Valley on Tuesday and Thursday.
Hewitt-Trussville’s 7A, Area 6 tournaments will be at Vestavia Hills. The girls tournament will be Tuesday and Thursday, while the boys tournament will be Wednesday and Friday.
WRESTLING
The Hewitt-Trussville wrestling team defeated Helena 65-15 last Wednesday. Winning matches for the Huskies were Clark Box (106 pounds), Dalton Zimmerman (126), Delvechhio Alston (132), Thomas Shaffer (138), Logan Reaves (145), Lucas Reaves (152), Andrew Shelton (160), Hunter Jones (195), Chris Hawkins (220) and Colby Little (285).
INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
The Hewitt-Trussville indoor track and field team completed the season at the state meet last Saturday. The Hewitt girls finished second in Class 7A to earn the state runner-up trophy, while the boys finished in third. Click here for a recap of the meet.
SOCCER
The Hewitt-Trussville and Pinson Valley soccer teams began their seasons last Friday. Hewitt-Trussville’s boys played in the Lakeshore Shootout, falling to Mountain Brook 3-1. Pinson’s boys were also in the event, beginning the year with a scoreless draw against Northridge and a 4-2 win over St. John Paul II. For the Indians, Chato Hernandez scored twice, while Zaylen McCray and Carlos Del Toro each notched goals of their own.
Hewitt’s girls began the year with a win, knocking off Bob Jones 2-1. Bob Jones scored first in the game, breaking a scoreless tie after halftime. But goals from Anna Grace Savage (assisted by Julia Farris) and another from Jocelyn Davis with 4:51 left to play lifted the Huskies to the victory.
On Saturday, the Hewitt boys earned a scoreless draw against Chelsea and beat Indian Springs 2-1. The girls beat Grissom 2-1 as well. Pinson Valley's boys drew 1-1 with Boaz.
