Here's a look back at the last week of Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school athletics.
BASKETBALL
The Clay-Chalkville basketball teams picked up Class 6A, Area 12 wins last Monday, sweeping Gardendale. The Lady Cougars picked up a 40-28 win over the Rockets, while the boys pulled out a 66-64 win in overtime. Donovan Shangase led the Cougars with 27 points, while Isiah Daniel had 12 points and Jonathan Harris finished with 11 points.
On Tuesday, Hewitt-Trussville and Pinson Valley took the floor once again as well. Hewitt was back in Class 7A, Area 6 action and split with Spain Park. The Lady Huskies outlasted Spain Park 48-44 and the boys took a 63-57 loss.
Pinson Valley took a couple wins in Class 6A, Area 12 play against Gardendale. The Lady Indians earned their third win of the season in a 56-27 triumph. Bryanna Williams had a monster game, going for 35 points, seven rebounds and five steals. Lauryn Green added 10 rebounds and seven assists as well. The boys team rolled to a 76-54 victory over the Rockets. Greedy Williams led the way with 23 points and four assists. Three other Indians reached double figures, as well. Terry Coner had 14 points, five rebounds and three assists, Caleb White finished with 13 points and two steals, and Jo Jo James contributed 11 points, four boards and four assists.
Hewitt-Trussville and Clay-Chalkville wrapped up area play on Friday. The Lady Huskies capped off a 4-2 area slate with a 61-33 win over Gadsden City. Amiya Payne posted a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead the way. Audre Benson had 14 points and two steals, while April Hooks and Jordan Hunter each had eight points, with Hunter adding eight assists. Hewitt’s boys capped off area play with their first area win, a 62-60 triumph over the Titans. Carter Hollis and Tyler Pickett led the charge with 16 points each and Ray Rolley had nine points.
Clay-Chalkville’s girls fell 49-37 to Mortimer Jordan but the boys earned a 55-37 victory. Shangase led the Cougars with 23 points, while Daniel had 13 points and Harris finished with 10 points.
BOWLING
The Hewitt-Trussville boys bowling team capped off a special season with a run to the semifinals of the state tournament last Friday. Click here for a full recap of the tournament.
WRESTLING
The Hewitt-Trussville wrestling team was in action last week. On Tuesday, the Huskies split a tri-match, beating Bob Jones 81-0 and losing to Arab 32-22. The Huskies had better fortune on Thursday, sweeping a tri-match. The Huskies beat Hoover 47-24 and knocked off James Clemens 61-12.
TRACK AND FIELD
The Hewitt-Trussville track and field team wrapped up the regular season over the weekend at the Last Chance Invitational at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
The Huskies had several individual winners. Kelsey Martin won the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.01 seconds and the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 7.5 inches, Maci Mills won the 800 in 2:22.24 and the 1,600 in 5:16.88, the girls 4x200 team won in 1:46.66, Lea Townsend won the shot put with throw of 39-1.25, Armoni Goodwin won the 60 in 6.94 seconds, Bobby Stanbery won the 400 in 51.01, Nathan Knox won the 3,200 in 9:38.25, the boys 4x200 team won in 1:30.39, CJ Curtis won the high jump at 5-10, Julian Collins won the long jump at 24-5 and the triple jump at 45-7.25 and Tanveer Raza won the shot put at 54-7.25.
Other podium finishers for the Huskies included Sydney White (third in the 800-meter run and third in shot put), Ethan Womack (third in pentathlon and second in high jump), Brianna Beckham (third in 60), Avery Cahoon (third in 800 and second in 1,600), Sophia Knox (second in 3,200), Martin (second in triple jump), Collins (third in 60), Alex Jones (third in 400), Wil Edwards (second in 800), Jacob Jones (third in 800), Mitchell Phillips (second in 1,600), Cameron Smith (third in pole vault) and Jacob Copham (second in shot put).
