Here's a look back at the last week of Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school athletics.
BASKETBALL
Last Tuesday, the Hewitt-Trussville basketball teams traveled to Spain Park for a Class 7A, Area 6 set of games. The Lady Huskies were impressive in a 43-28 win. April Hooks led the way with 17 points and 5 rebounds in the game. D’yona Jones posted a double-double, finishing with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Spain Park’s boys took down the Huskies 67-35.
Pinson Valley’s boys finished off a perfect Class 6A, Area 12 slate with an 80-51 win over Gardendale that night. The Indians had five double-digit scorers in the contest. Terry Coner led them all with 17 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists. Isaiah Sims posted 14 points and 5 rebounds. Caleb White had 12 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals. Cameron White and Austin Coner each scored 11 points.
On Wednesday, the Clay-Chalkville girls fell to Ramsay 61-43. Kamoriah Gaines led the Lady Cougars in defeat with 14 points. Ranesha Smiley and Brooklyn Phillips each scored 9 points. Clay’s boys lost to Hueytown 72-41.
Hewitt-Trussville traveled to Gadsden City on Friday evening to finish up Area 6 play. The Lady Huskies dominated in a 55-26 win and finished 5-1 in area play. They will flip a coin Monday to determine whether they or Vestavia Hills will get to host the area tournament as the top seed. The Huskies boys fell 65-45.
Clay-Chalkville hosted Mortimer Jordan to finish up Area 12 play as well. The Lady Cougars held the game close for a half, but the Lady Blue Devils eventually pulled away in a 66-40 win. Gaines scored 15 points in the game, while Phillips and Kameron Sanders each scored 8 points. Clay’s boys earned a 51-39 win, as Devon McKinnon scored 15 points and Tiawan Hardy added 12 points.
Pinson Valley’s boys already notched the Area 12 title, but beat Parker 54-29 on Friday night in a non-area contest. Caleb White went for 16 points, Cmaeron White scored 14 and Raymon McCants knocked down three 3-pointers and scored 10 points.
BOWLING
The Hewitt-Trussville boys bowling team competed in the state tournament last Thursday and Friday, springing an upset and advancing to the semifinals. Click here for a full recap of the tournament.
WRESTLING
The Hewitt-Trussville wrestling team swept a tri-match last Tuesday, beating Mortimer Jordan 54-21 and knocking off Oxford 72-9.
On Thursday, the Huskies dominated Arab 62-9. Clark Box (106 pounds), Bradley Hastings (113), Alton Lucas (120), Dalton Zimmerman (126), Logan Reaves (145), Lucas Reaves (152), Andrew Shelton (160), Luke Golden (170), Hunter Jones (195), Chris Hawkins (220) and Zack Chatman (285) all won matches for the Huskies.
INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
The Hewitt-Trussville indoor track and field team competed in the Last Chance Invitational last Saturday at the Birmingham CrossPlex. Leading the way for the Huskies were Madisyn Hawkins and Tanveer Raza, who won the girls and boys shot put competitions. Hawkins won with a throw of 35 feet, 7.5 inches and Raza won with a throw of 54-4.5.
The girls 4x200-meter relay team took home the top prize as well. Sophia Knox (second in 1,600-meter run) also finished on the podium.
