Here's a look back at the last week of Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school athletics.
BASKETBALL
A couple local teams played last Monday in events celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The Hewitt-Trussville boys team beat Holt 53-37 at Brookwood, in the Birmingham vs. Tuscaloosa Challenge. Tyler Blake led the Huskies with 23 points in the contest.
Pinson Valley capped off the evening at Fairfield with an 83-75 win over Midfield. Cam White went off, going for 43 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Isaiah Sims posted a strong double-double, going for 21 points and 11 rebounds.
Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley returned to Class 6A, Area 12 play Tuesday evening. The Cougars traveled to Gardendale and earned a sweep. The Lady Cougars drubbed Gardendale, winning 80-45, behind two masterful offensive performances. Brooklyn Phillips poured in 33 points and Kamoriah Gaines added 30 points to provide nearly all of the team’s scoring.
Clay’s boys earned a much-needed 42-40 win over the Rockets as well. Jalen Hudson had 14 points to lead the way for the Cougars, with Devon McKinnon scoring 12 points and Cordae Averette finishing with 7 points and 5 blocks.
Pinson Valley rode over to Mortimer Jordan and the boys came out with a 59-49 win, in which they pulled away late in the second half. For the Indians, Terry Coner was the top performer, finishing with 25 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals and 3 assists. Sims also added 14 points and 5 rebounds. White had 11 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists as well.
In area play Friday evening, Hewitt-Trussville was swept by Vestavia Hills, while Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley squared off.
Hewitt-Trussville’s girls fell to Vestavia Hills 50-38, despite Jordan Hunter going for 16 points to lead the team. D’yona Jones added 9 points and 4 rebounds as well. The Hewitt boys played the Rebels tough, but fell 56-45. Rolley notched 20 points for the Huskies in that contest.
Clay-Chalkville’s girls posted a 43-37 win over Pinson Valley. Gaines led the team with 15 points and Phillips scored 12 in the win. Pinson’s boys won the nightcap 74-41. Coner led the way with 22 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Sims had 15 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Cameron White finished with 14 points, 3 rebounds and 2 steals.
WRESTLING
The Vestavia Hills wrestling team knocked off Hewitt-Trussville 31-21 in the Class 7A state duals semifinals Tuesday evening. After the Huskies jumped out to a 12-6 lead, the Rebels took control of the match, scoring the next 22 points and taking a commanding 28-12 lead and hanging on from there.
Hewitt-Trussville competed in the Ragsdale Invitational at St. Clair County over the weekend. Mason Holloway (184 pounds) and Zack Chatman (287) each placed third in their weight class.
BOWLING
The Hewitt-Trussville boys bowling team qualified for the state tournament following its performance at the Class 7A North Regional tournament last week in Tuscaloosa. The boys earned the No. 1 seed after the first day of play. In bracket play, the Huskies knocked off Tuscaloosa County 4-2 in the opening round. Vestavia Hills toppled the Huskies 4-2 in the semifinal round.
The state tournament is this Thursday and Friday at The Alley in Gadsden.
Hewitt’s girls fell in the regional tournament, ending their season. They earned the No. 5 seed after Thursday’s action, but fell 4-0 to No. 4 Spain Park in the opening round of bracket play Friday.
INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
The Hewitt-Trussville indoor track and field team competed in the MLK Indoor Track Classic last Monday at the Birmingham CrossPlex. For the Huskies, Tristan Teer won the 3,200-meter run with a time of 9:37 and Tanveer Raza took home top honors in the shot put, with a throw of 54 feet, 8.5 inches.
Maci Mills finished second in the 1,600-meter run, Tori Mack was second in 60-meter hurdles, the girls 4x800-meter relay team won, Jaggerd Moore and Michael Igbinoghene were second and third in high jump and Moore was second in high jump and third in triple jump.
