High school soccer season started at Hewitt-Trussville this year.
Hewitt-Trussville hosted many of the local teams Jan. 22 as part of the annual preseason media day event.
The Huskies participated in the event as well, as the boys and girls teams previewed the 2025 campaign.
The Hewitt-Trussville boys are looking to bounce back from a tough 2024 season and put together a strong year under fourth-year head coach Daniel Decker. Competing in Class 7A, Area 6 with Hoover, Vestavia Hills and Oak Mountain, the Huskies know they will not have an easy fight.
“This team has a lot of potential that has yet to be realized,” Decker said. “We’re very aggressive, very fast, and there’s a lot we can bring to a season.”
With only four seniors graduating, the Huskies return an experienced squad, something Decker believes will be a major advantage.
“This entire squad has varsity experience,” he said. “We remember last season just enough to never want it to happen again. We had a lot of poor luck, and maybe our preparation wasn’t where it needed to be. From the first practice this year, the energy has been different.”
Senior center back Jacob Serena echoed that sentiment.
“It will put some pressure on us, but it’s good pressure,” he said. “We’ve felt it before, and we have a lot of guys who have been in high-pressure scenarios.”
Junior winger Jonathon Emmerich is eager to prove that last season’s record wasn’t a true reflection of the team.
“The record didn’t show what we had,” he said. “People have that drive to succeed.”
The Hewitt-Trussville girls, ranked No. 10 in the preseason Class 7A poll, are also aiming for a fresh start under first-year head coach Sean Gibson.
With 28 years of coaching experience in Alabama, Gibson is excited about his new opportunity.
“I’m ecstatic to be here,” he said. “This is a good group that is really chomping at the bit to get going.”
The Huskies return 10 seniors, and Gibson believes their experience will be key.
Senior Addie Rutland said the transition under Gibson has gone smoothly.
“It’s been a good adjustment so far,” she said. “He’s getting to know us, and we’re getting to know him.”
Senior Brecken Phillips added that the team’s chemistry is a strength.
“Our personalities mesh well together,” she said. “We have a good balance, and every senior knows their role on the team.”
Senior Janie Steele is confident the Huskies can take a big step forward this season.
“We have the talent and chemistry to have a really good year,” she said.
