Hewitt-Trussville High School’s Merritt Daniel finished second in the Class 7A state golf tournament.
Hewitt-Trussville High School junior Merritt Daniel turned in one of the standout individual performances of the Class 7A girls state golf tournament at the Robert Trent Jones Magnolia Grove Golf Course in Mobile, finishing second in the individual standings with a two-day total of 142.
Daniel arrived at state having already claimed medalist honors at the North Sub-State Tournament, where she shot a 73 to advance. She picked up where she left off, carding a 3-under 69 on May 12 — the low round of the day in the Class 7A girls' field — after opening with a 73 on May 11. The closing round moved her up the leaderboard and cemented her place as one of the top performers of the tournament.
She finished seven strokes behind champion Klare Jamison of Grissom, who won low medalist honors with a two-day total of 137 after firing rounds of 67-70. Jamison led a Grissom team that won the Class 7A girls’ title with a 451 total, edging defending state champion Auburn by three strokes.
