One of the best seasons in recent memory for the Hewitt-Trussville High School baseball team concluded earlier than the Huskies hoped.
The Huskies were knocked off by Bob Jones in the Class 7A quarterfinals, as the Patriots won a pair of one-run games to take the series from the top-ranked team in 7A.
Bob Jones grabbed the early momentum in the series with a 1-0 win last Saturday in a 10-inning game. Neither team could dent the scoreboard until Bob Jones finally scored in the 10th inning on Mason Rinehart's double. Hewitt-Trussville nearly won the game a couple innings earlier on a Cooper Huffman base hit, but the Huskies runner was cut down at home plate to extend the ball game.
Christian Helmers was brilliant on the mound, throwing eight innings of one-hit ball until the pitch limit forced his removal from the game. He carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning and struck out nine batters in his performance. Blake Bales threw two innings in relief.
The Huskies managed seven hits, with leadoff man Steele Hall finishing 2-for-4 to lead the way. Tanner Hermesch was efficient and able to remain in for the entire contest. He threw all 10 innings, striking out 12 batters.
Bob Jones won it's fourth straight one-run playoff game, beating the Huskies 4-3 in the second game of the series Monday evening.
Hewitt-Trussville notched a pair of runs in the first inning to jump ahead early, as Huffman and Helmers each had RBI singles. The score remained 2-0 until the fourth inning, when the Patriots tied the game at 2-2.
It looked as if the Huskies might force a decisive third game, when they scored the go-ahead run in the sixth inning on Cale McIntosh's go-ahead single. But Bob Jones answered right back, scoring two in the sixth to take the lead and hang on for the win.
Hall notched the only extra base hit for the Huskies, as he hit a triple. Hudson Mitchell threw six innings, allowing four runs on three hits.
Bob Jones will play Tuscaloosa County, which beat Hoover on Monday, in the 7A semifinals later this week.
The loss places a tough end to an otherwise incredible season for Hewitt-Trussville, which finished the year with a 33-4 record.
