The Hewitt-Trussville High School boys golf team finished fourth at the Class 7A state tournament Tuesday, May 11, 2021.
MOBILE -- Mother Nature was unkind to the Hewitt-Trussville High School boys golf team at the state tournament.
Inclement weather robbed the Huskies a chance to move up the leaderboard and make a run at the Class 7A state championship.
The state tournament was held at RTJ Magnolia Grove in Mobile and was originally slated to be a 36-hole event over May 10 and 11. Despite persistent rain on the first day, all golfers were able to complete a full round.
After that day, all four 7A boys teams were separated by a mere four strokes. Vestavia Hills led the way with a team score of 296, Enterprise was at 298, Auburn at 299 and Hewitt at 300.
The weather was worse the following day. Heavy rain and thunderstorms entered the area in the late morning, halting the tournament. The course was deemed unplayable for the remainder of the day.
As a result, the tournament was shortened to an 18-hole event, meaning all scores from the first day would be used to decide the state champions. Instead of having a chance to mount a charge, the Huskies had to settle for a fourth-place finish.
Cole Davidson and Ethan Hacker led Hewitt-Trussville with a round of 74 good for a tie for sixth place individually. Gavin Isbell ad Stuart Dickson shot a 76 to finish tied for 12th. Austin Freeman finished with a round of 84.
Hewitt proved it could play with the best all season long and in the postseason. The Huskies placed second in the Section 3 tournament April 26, finishing six strokes behind Vestavia Hills. Dickson led the team and finished second individually, as he shot a 67 on the day at the Country Club of Birmingham.
The following week, the Huskies actually topped Vestavia Hills in the North Sub-State tournament. Hewitt won the tournament with a score of 304, four strokes ahead of the Rebels. Dickson and Hacker shot rounds of 73 to lead the team at RTJ Hampton Cove in Huntsville.
The girls golf team did not qualify for the state tournament, but Molly Davidson made it as an individual and finished in a tie for second, firing a round of 70 on the first day of the state tournament.
Molly Davidson was the low medalist at the Section 3 tournament at Highland Park, firing a 71 and leading the Huskies to a second-place finish. Spain Park and Hewitt tied, with the Jaguars winning in a playoff.
She shot a 74 at the sub-state tournament and tied for the low medalist honors as well to clinch her spot at state.
