The Hewitt-Trussville High School boys track and field team finished as the Class 7A runner-up at the state meet May 2 in Gulf Shores.
Hewitt-Trussville High School put together a strong showing at the state outdoor track and field meet, finishing second in the Class 7A boys standings with 103.5 points and third in the girls standings with 62 points at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium in Gulf Shores in early May.
The boys effort was headlined by a pair of standout sprinters. Devin Kouanvih won the Class 7A 200-meter dash in 22.08 seconds after posting the fastest qualifying time in the prelims at 21.46. Raphael Boakye-Yiadom was one of the meet's most versatile performers, placing fourth in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.39 and third in the triple jump at 48 feet, 1 inch. Zion Westry added a fourth-place finish in the triple jump at 48-0. Ethan Ridley placed sixth in the triple jump at 46-7.75.
Demetri Hall Jr. won the Class 7A 300-meter hurdles in 37.96 seconds, a personal best and the fourth-fastest time in Alabama this season, one of the more impressive individual performances of the entire meet. Daryl Thomas Jr. placed fifth in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.80 and sixth in the 300-meter hurdles in 39.78. Matthew McGuire took fifth in the 400 meters in a personal best 48.60.
Max Ryan placed third in the 800 meters in 1:54.68, while Noah Jordan finished second in the 1,600 in 4:14.87 and third in the 3,200 in 9:25.89. John Paul Amari added a sixth-place finish in the 3,200 in 9:33.91, a season best. Stewart Nelms placed 10th in the 3,200 in 9:41.89, a personal best. Maddox Turner placed ninth in the 800 in 1:59.61.
Ben Reeves took second in the boys pole vault at 14-6, with Charlie Peacock placing sixth at 13-0. Will Phillips placed seventh in the long jump at 21-11.75.
The boys 4x100 relay finished second in the final at 41.67 after posting the fastest qualifying time in the prelims at 41.28, the third-fastest in Alabama and among the top 100 in the country this season. The boys 4x800 relay placed third in 7:55.15.
On the girls side, Mary Durham led the way with a second-place finish in the 800 meters in 2:15.44, the fifth-fastest time in Alabama this season, and a fifth-place finish in the 1,600 in 5:06.12. Emmie Goodell placed fourth in the 800 in 2:17.42, a personal best and the ninth-fastest time in the state. Jaliyah Edwards placed second in the discus at 126-1 and third in the shot put at 38-6.50. Savannah Bullock added a sixth-place finish in the discus at 114-11. Olivia Reese placed third in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.52. Brooklyn Vandegrift took sixth in the girls pole vault at 10-0, a personal best. Lia Carter placed eighth in the long jump at 17-4.50.
The girls 4x100 relay finished seventh in the final at 49.03. The girls 4x800 relay won the Class 7A title in 9:32.05, the fastest time in Alabama this season.
George Merchant swept all four para ambulatory events for Hewitt-Trussville, winning the 100 meters in 15.91, the discus at 71-9, the shot put at 28-0 and the javelin at 57-5. Caylin Kennemur won the girls para ambulatory 100 meters in 20.63, the 200 meters in 45.86, the discus at 42-9 and the shot put at 19-10.25, a personal best. Sarah Thomas won the girls para ambulatory 100 meters in 20.31 and the 200 meters in 43.13, a personal best.
