The Hewitt-Trussville High School softball team won the Class 7A East Central Regional tournament in Montgomery on May 14, 2021.
Two years later, the Hewitt-Trussville High School softball finally gets a chance to defend its crown.
The Huskies won the Class 7A state championship in 2019, but were not given the chance to finish what it started in 2020.
But they made quick work of the 7A East Central Regional in Montgomery last Friday, winning two games and earning the No. 1 qualifier spot to the state tournament.
Hewitt-Trussville began the regional with a dominant 12-2 win over Central-Phenix City. Riley Tyree led the Huskies offense with three runs batted in. Jenna Lord and Katelyn Murphy each finished with two hits and two RBIs in the game as well.
Sara Phillips was strong in the circle. She went six innings, allowing just two runs (one earned) on three hits, with nine strikeouts.
The Huskies drilled Auburn 11-4 in the second game to make quick work of things Friday.
Lord stole the show offensively, finishing with a double among her two hits and driving in five runs. Murphy drove in two more runs, while Anyce Harvey scored three runs. Hannah Dorsett, Crystal Maze and Tyree each registered multi-hit games as well.
Tori Hyde went the distance, surrendering four runs (three earned) in seven innings.
Vestavia Hills upset Auburn to earn the second qualifying spot from the regional.
Hewitt-Trussville takes on Baker to begin the state tournament Thursday at 9 a.m.
