FOOTBALL
The Pinson Valley football team earned a 26-14 victory over Muscle Shoals in the Class 6A quarterfinals last Friday, while Clay-Chalkville fell to Oxford 20-13. This week, Pinson Valley will travel to Oxford for the semifinals.
BASKETBALL
Hewitt-Trussville
The Hewitt-Trussville boys basketball team began last week on the winning side of things, as the Huskies knocked off Moody 69-58 on Monday night. Cameron Glover led the Huskies with 24 points for the game.
Hewitt-Trussville’s boys and girls traveled to Huffman on Tuesday night and came away with a split. The Lady Huskies dominated en route to a 72-25 victory. Leah Harrison led all scorers with 18 points and Amiya Payne added 15. The boys team suffered a 66-58 loss. Glover led the way offensively with 19 points. Jacolby Thomas scored 16 points and Brandan Copeland chipped in 13 points as well.
Hewitt-Trussville swept Oak Mountain on Friday night. The Lady Huskies picked up an 83-24 win over a Lady Eagles team dealing with a handful of injuries. Payne led the way with 25 points and was followed by Jordan Hunter’s 17 points. April Hooks and Harrison scored 10 points. The Huskies won 77-62 in the boys game. Oak Mountain’s Noah Young and Hewitt’s Glover each scored 15 points. Carter Hollis added 14 points for the Huskies and Zane Nelson had 12 points for Oak Mountain.
Both Huskies teams are off to a strong start, with the girls sitting at 5-0 overall and the boys at 4-1. This week, the boys play two games at Plainview on Monday and Tuesday, while the girls travel to Houston High School in Tennessee over the weekend.
Pinson Valley
The Pinson Valley basketball teams took to the hardwood last Monday night at Center Point. The girls team suffered a 58-21 loss to the Lady Eagles, before the boys opened their season with a 71-56 win over Center Point. Kam Woods stole the show for the Indians with 41 points, 10 assists and six steals. Cam Scott stuffed the stat sheet as well, going for 17 points, 12 rebounds, five blocks and five steals.
The Lady Indians hosted Pelham on Wednesday evening and fell to the Panthers 60-26.
The girls team is now 1-5 overall and the boys are 1-0. This week, the boys play in Fairfield’s Heritage Classic Monday through Wednesday.
Clay-Chalkville
The Clay-Chalkville basketball teams faced off against Helena on Thursday night. The Lady Cougars picked up their first win of the year, winning 45-43 after shooting the ball well in the second half. Aukeivah Tellis led the way with 13 points and Khali Johnson scored 10 points. The boys took their first defeat of the season, a 66-49 loss to the Huskies. Helena’s Daunte Cave scored 26 points to lead all scorers, with teammate Kellen Watkins scoring 16 points and Caden Pierce adding 11. Daniel Beachem led Clay with 10 points.
On Saturday, the boys team began play in Spain Park’s Jag Classic with a 37-36 loss to Chelsea. Caleb Moore hit the game-winning free throw with three seconds to play, as the Hornets avenged a loss to the Cougars the previous week. Clay’s Donovan Shangase led all scorers with 11 points. Bryant Royster had 10 points for Chelsea and Moore finished with nine.
The girls also played on Saturday, dropping a 52-36 contest to Vestavia Hills in the opening game of Mountain Brook’s Turkey Jam.
The girls team has a 1-4 overall record and the boys are now 2-2. This week, the Lady Cougars play two more games at the Turkey Jam and the boys finish the Jag Classic Monday and Tuesday.
BOWLING
The Hewitt-Trussville bowling teams played in Thompson’s Warrior Classic last Wednesday. The boys finished third and the girls advanced to the second round of the bracket format.
