Here's a look at some of the local high school sports action from last week.
FOOTBALL
The Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley football teams advanced in the Class 6A playoffs last Friday, with both qualifying for the semifinals. The Cougars took care of Athens 35-7, while the Indians dispatched Fort Payne 48-10.
This week, Clay-Chalkville travels to Oxford and Pinson Valley heads to Muscle Shoals.
BASKETBALL
Hewitt-Trussville
The Hewitt-Trussville basketball teams traveled to Center Point on Thursday night and both came away with victories. The Lady Huskies dominated en route to a 59-32 win. Amiya Payne led the team with 20 points and Jordan Hunter added seven points. The boys team also cruised to a 66-40 victory. Cameron Glover scored 12 points, Carter Hollis scored 11 and Cole Trest chipped in 10 in a balanced scoring effort.
On Saturday, the Lady Huskies participated in the Mortimer Jordan Tip-Off Challenge and cruised past Austin to pick up a 50-24 victory.
The Hewitt-Trussville girls are now 3-0 on the season, while the boys are 2-0. This week, the boys host Moody on Monday night, both teams head to Huffman on Tuesday and Oak Mountain on Friday.
Clay-Chalkville
The Clay-Chalkville basketball teams traveled to Chelsea last Tuesday to begin their seasons. The Lady Hornets took care of the Cougars in a 39-23 victory. The game got off to a bit of a slow start and was tied at 6-6 after a quarter of play, but Chelsea took control in the second quarter and held a 22-13 lead at the half. In the third quarter, Chelsea’s defense surrendered just two points to Clay-Chalkville. Jordan Parker led all scorers with 14 points, with Sydney Schwallie adding nine points and Mary Henley Carney knocking down a pair of 3-pointers for six points. Aukeivah Tellis and Cheyenne Pearson scored six points each for Clay.
In the boys game, Clay-Chalkville came out on top with a 58-40 victory. The Cougars shot the ball well in their season opener, draining 10 3s on the night. Clay-Chalkville opened up a 30-19 lead at halftime and never allowed the game to get tight in the second half. Daniel Beachem led the Cougars with 17 points. Isiah Daniel followed with 16 points, as he knocked down four 3-pointers. Jake McDaniel buried four triples as well to score 12 points. Jacob Tierney led Chelsea with 11 points.
On Thursday, Clay-Chalkville traveled to Mortimer Jordan and split. The Lady Cougars fell 47-38, as Mortimer Jordan’s Bellah Machen led all scorers with 14 points. Tamyia Muse led Clay with 11 points and Khali Johnson scored 10. The boys notched a second straight win to begin the year with a 56-40 victory. Daniel led the way with 12 points, followed by Donovan Shangase (11 points, seven assists) and McDaniel (10 points).
Clay-Chalkville’s girls participated in the Mortimer Jordan Tip-Off Challenge on Saturday, falling to West Point 64-61 in a tight contest. Muse led Clay once again with 18 points, while Tellis chipped in 14 points and Johnson scored 11.
The Clay-Chalkville girls are 0-3 on the season and the boys are 2-0. This week, the Cougars host Helena on Thursday. On Saturday, the boys begin play in Spain Park’s Thanksgiving tournament and the girls start the Spartan Turkey Jam at Mountain Brook.
Pinson Valley
The Pinson Valley girls basketball team started off last week with a 57-47 loss to Hueytown on Monday. On Thursday, the Lady Indians traveled to Wallace State and lost 52-40 to Addison. For Pinson Valley, Courtney Whatley led the way with 18 points. Kayla Hawkins added eight points and Wayonna Brooks scored seven points.
The Pinson Valley girls are now 1-3 on the season. This week, both boys and girls teams travel to Center Point on Monday night, as the boys begin their season. The girls then travel to Pelham on Wednesday.
BOWLING
The Hewitt-Trussville bowling teams opened their seasons with wins last Thursday. The boys defeated Shades Valley 1,213-1,023 and the girls won 1,037-813. Kyle Wright led the boys with a 192 and Allison Kerins bowled a 153 to pace the girls team.
