AHSAA State Cross Country

Here's a look at some of the local high school sports action from last week.
FOOTBALL
The Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley football teams each advanced through the first round of the Class 6A playoffs last Friday. Clay-Chalkville knocked off Helena 17-0 and Pinson Valley took care of Homewood 42-7.
This Friday, Pinson Valley travels to Fort Payne and Clay-Chalkville hosts Athens in second-round action.
BASKETBALL
Hewitt-Trussville
The Hewitt-Trussville basketball teams began their seasons last Thursday, as the boys and girls teams knocked off McAdory. The girls pulled off a 68-63 win behind 19 points from Amiya Payne. D’yona Jones scored 17 points, Leah Harrison scored 14 and Kenleigh Cahalan chipped in 10 points.
The boys team picked up a convincing 85-67 win over a solid Yellow Jackets team. The Huskies started fast, as Cameron Glover knocked down a trifecta of 3-pointers in the opening period to give his team a 21-11 lead. Hewitt-Trussville opened up a 52-32 lead at the half, as Brandan Copeland scored eight of his 12 points in the second period. Glover led the Huskies with 18 points for the game, with Carter Hollis scoring 16. Jacolby Thomas added 11 points.
This week, Hewitt-Trussville hosts Center Point on Thursday. The girls will play in Mortimer Jordan’s tip-off event on Saturday against Austin.
Pinson Valley
The Pinson Valley girls basketball team began its season last Saturday as part of the Athens Lasy Eagles Tip-Off Tournament. The Lady Indians notched a season-opening win over Southside-Selma, as they prevailed 41-33 in overtime. Courtney Whatley led the way for Pinson Valley, as she scored 23 points. Jada Griffin made a layup to send the game to overtime and finished with seven points and nine rebounds. Shameria Blocton scored nine points and defensive star Carmen Holmes grabbed nine boards. Pinson Valley fell to Athens 66-32 in the following game.
This week, the girls travel to Hueytown on Monday and play Addison at Wallace State Community College on Thursday afternoon.
The Clay-Chalkville basketball teams begin their seasons this week, as they head to Chelsea on Tuesday and Mortimer Jordan on Thursday. The Lady Cougars will take on West Point on Saturday at Mortimer Jordan.
CROSS-COUNTRY
The Hewitt-Trussville cross-country teams completed their seasons last Saturday at the Class 7A state meet in Danville. The Hewitt girls placed fourth and the boys finished fifth. Here are the top times for the Huskies:
