BASKETBALL
Hewitt-Trussville
The Hewitt-Trussville boys basketball team made the first of two trips last week to Madison Academy on Monday afternoon. The Huskies knocked off the Mustangs 66-65, with Colin Glover scoring 20 points to lead the way for the team. Jacolby Thomas scored 15 points and Tyler Pickett added 12 points.
Both teams returned to Class 7A, Area 6 play on Tuesday at home against Mountain Brook. The Lady Huskies rebounded from back-to-back area losses to notch a 65-41 win over the Lady Spartans. Amiya Payne poured in 32 points in the victory. The Hewitt boys played the Spartans tight for the first three quarters, but Mountain Brook pulled away in the final period for an 83-62 win. Mountain Brook’s Colby Jones led all scorers with 35 points and eight rebounds. Cam Glover led the Huskies with 21 points. Brandan Copeland scored 13 points as well.
On Friday, the Huskies pulled off a sweep of Vestavia Hills. The Lady Huskies held Vestavia Hills scoreless in the fourth quarter to earn a 37-33 win. Erica Jones led the way for the team with 14 points in the game and Payne added 11 points. The boys team rolled to a 71-50 win, as Cameron Glover finished with 19 points. Copeland added 13 points and Pickett scored nine.
Hewitt-Trussville was swept by Madison Academy on Saturday. The girls fell 52-27 and the boys dropped a 52-49 decision.
The Hewitt girls are now 15-7 overall, 2-2 in area. The boys are 11-14, 2-2. This week, the Huskies are at Spain Park on Tuesday and at Mountain Brook on Friday to conclude area play. On Saturday, the boys host Hoover.
Clay-Chalkville
The Clay-Chalkville basketball teams returned to Class 6A, Area 12 play last Tuesday, notching a sweep of Pell City. The Lady Cougars cruised to a 41-18 win. Vonquice Wilson led the team with 12 points, with Aukeivah Tellis scoring 10 points and Cheyenne Pearson adding nine in support. The boys team earned a 67-58 win over the Panthers, as Jaden Johnson poured in 21 points.
The Cougars made a road trip to Gardendale on Thursday evening and came away with a pair of wins. The Lady Cougars picked up a 62-49 win and the boys earned a 63-54 win over a strong Gardendale boys team. For the Cougars, Johnson poured in 20 points, with Donovan Shangase adding 16 points and Isiah Daniel scoring 11 points in support.
The Clay-Chalkville girls are now 14-7 overall, 3-0 in area play. The boys are 11-11, 2-1. This week, the Cougars conclude area play at Pinson Valley on Tuesday and travel to Fort Payne on Friday.
Pinson Valley
The Pinson Valley basketball teams began last week’s play on Tuesday. The boys team hosted Sidney Lanier in front of a packed gym, as the Indians took down the Poets 75-61 in front of a student-heavy crowd during the school day. In the game, Kam Woods led four players in double figures with 26 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. JoJo James had 15 points and eight rebounds, GaQuincy McKinstry finished with 15 points, five rebounds, five assists, three blocks and three steals, and Cam Scott had 13 points, eight rebounds and seven blocks. The girls team fell to Hueytown 63-54 on Tuesday evening. Courtney Washington poured in 34 points and Shameria Blocton finished with 10 points for the Lady Indians.
Pinson Valley played Center Point on Friday. The Lady Indians fell 66-18 and the boys earned an 85-76 victory. For the boys, Woods went for 45 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals. Scott had 13 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks. McKinstry finished with 11 points, seven rebounds, three blocks and three steals.
The Pinson boys are now 19-3 overall, 2-0 in area play. The girls are 4-18, 0-2. This week, the boys play at Fairfield in the MLK Roundball Classic on Monday. On Tuesday, both teams host Clay-Chalkville in an area matchup. Both teams travel to Pell City on Thursday and the boys host Lee-Montgomery on Saturday.
WRESTLING
The Hewitt-Trussville wrestling team fell to Huntsville 36-26 in the first round of the Class 7A state duals last week.
INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
The Hewitt-Trussville indoor track and field team competed in the inaugural Hump Day Octameet last Wednesday at the Birmingham CrossPlex. The Huskies finished fourth in the girls event and the boys finished second. For the girls, Brianna Beckham was second in the 60-meter dash and third in the 400. Kelsey Martin was third in the 60 hurdles, third in the long jump and won the triple jump, and the girls 4x200 team won the relay event in 1:46. Lea Townsend also won the shot put event. For the boys, Omari Kelly was third in the 60, the boys 4x200 relay team won in 1:32, Julian Collins won the long jump and finished second in the triple jump.
BOWLING
The Hewitt-Trussville bowling teams teams were in action last Tuesday against Vestavia Hills. The guys lost a close match 1,406-1,393, with Kyle Wright having the high score of 207. The girls also lost a close match, 1,014-1,004. Allison Kerins had the high game with 156.
On Friday, both teams advanced to the state tournament with wins at the North Regional Tournament. The Hewitt boys earned the No. 4 seed and began their run through bracket play with a 1,416-970 win over Shades Valley. In the second round, they beat Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa 1,364-1,316 before taking down top-seeded East Limestone 1,420-1,344 in the semifinals. In the final, the Huskies fell to Sparkman 1,433-1,323. Hewitt’s girls were the No. 6 seed and beat Huntsville 1,054-787 in the first round. Sparkman beat the Lady Huskies 1,198-1,067 in the second round.
The state tournament is Thursday and Friday at Oak Mountain Lanes in Pelham.
