Hewitt-Trussville at Vestavia Hills boys basketball

BASKETBALL
Hewitt-Trussville
The Hewitt-Trussville basketball teams opened up Class 7A, Area 6 play last Tuesday evening at Vestavia Hills. Vestavia’s girls downed Hewitt-Trussville 46-41. Emma Smith tallied a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead the way. Alison Stubbs scored 13 points and Ally Smith added 11 points. Erica Jones scored 18 points to pace Hewitt-Trussville, with Amiya Payne adding 10 points. The boys game was a tight one, with the Rebels pulling out a 79-77 win in overtime. Win Miller and Grant Uldrich scored 14 points to lead Vestavia.
Hewitt-Trussville split with Spain Park on Friday evening in another area contest. The Spain Park girls ran away from the Lady Huskies in a 64-37 victory. Spain Park’s Sarah Ashlee Barker scored 26 points to lead the way. The Hewitt boys earned a 66-60 win and had four double-digit scorers. Cam Glover led the way with 20 points, while Colin Glover and Jacolby Thomas each added 15 points. Brandan Copeland also scored 11 points.
The Hewitt-Trussville boys are 9-11 and 1-1 in area play, while the girls are 13-6, 0-2. This week, the boys travel to Madison Academy on Monday. Both teams host Mountain Brook on Tuesday and Vestavia Hills on Friday in area action. On Saturday, both teams will head to Madison Academy.
Clay-Chalkville
The Clay-Chalkville basketball teams got back into Class 6A, Area 12 play last Tuesday by hosting Pinson Valley. The girls team dominated on the way to a 54-21 victory. Aukeivah Tellis led the way with 15 points and Vonquice Wilson added 14. The Pinson boys took home a 70-64 win. Kam Woods led all scorers with 42 points, with GaQuincy McKinstry adding 17 points in support.
Clay-Chalkville notched a split with Oxford on Friday evening. The Lady Cougars earned a close 52-49 victory, with Tellis leading the way with 16 points. Michelle Jones also added 10 points. The boys fell to the Jackets 55-42.
The Clay-Chalkville girls are now 12-7 overall and 2-0 in area play, while the boys are 9-11, 1-1. This week, the Cougars are at Pell City in area action on Tuesday and travel to Gardendale on Thursday.
Pinson Valley
The Pinson Valley boys basketball team opened play last week with a 60-54 home win over Bessemer City on Monday evening. Bessemer City tied the game at 45-45 early in the fourth quarter, but the Indians went on a 12-3 run to open up a nine-point edge and put the game away. In the contest, Kam Woods led the way with 29 points and three assists. GaQuincy McKinstry had a strong game as well, with 19 points, five rebounds and four assists. Demarques Densmore and JoJo James combined for 12 points and 12 rebounds as well.
On Tuesday, Pinson Valley opened up Class 6A, Area 12 play. The Lady Indians fell to Clay-Chalkville 54-21 and the boys earned a 70-54 win. Woods notched 42 points, six rebounds and four steals to lead the way. McKinstry filled the stat sheet, going for 17 points, five rebounds, four steals and two assists. James pulled down 12 rebounds and Cam Scott had 10 rebounds and three blocks.
The Indians were back in area action on Thursday evening at home. Pinson’s girls fell to Pell City 66-36 but the boys dominated to the tune of an 88-53 win. Woods went off for 40 points, eight assists and five rebounds. James had a big scoring night as well, finishing with 24 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals. Scott finished with 10 rebounds and five blocks, and McKinstry chipped in nine points, six boards and five assists.
The Pinson Valley boys are 17-3 overall and 2-0 in area play, while the girls are 4-16, 0-2. This week, the Indians host Hueytown on Wednesday and Center Point on Friday.
WRESTLING
Last week, the Hewitt-Trussville wrestling team beat Spain Park 43-25 on Wednesday. Vestavia Hills bested the Huskies 59-11 on Thursday. Hewitt also finished fourth in the Southeastern Pools at Thompson over the weekend.
TRACK AND FIELD
Hewitt-Trussville’s Spencer Young competed in the KYA HS Indoor Classic in Johnson City, Tennessee, last weekend. The freshman finished 15th in the 1-mile run with a time of 4:46.02.
