Hewitt-Trussville
The Hewitt-Trussville girls basketball team extended its season with an upset win over Austin last Thursday in the Class 7A Northwest Regional semifinals. Click here for a full recap of the game. The Lady Huskies will face area rival Spain Park on Tuesday at 9 a.m. at Wallace State Community College with a trip to the state final four on the line. Spain Park has won all four previous matchups between the two teams this season.
Clay-Chalkville
The Clay-Chalkville girls basketball team saw its season come to an end on Monday night, as the Lady Cougars fell to Shades Valley 39-29 in the Class 6A Northeast Sub-Regional. Clay-Chalkville went down double digits in the second quarter but closed the deficit to seven points at halftime, 22-15.
Clay-Chalkville began the third quarter on a 9-2 run, as a Monika Johnson 3-pointer tied the game at 24-24 late in the period. Shades Valley took a one-point lead into the final quarter, and it was a one-possession game with under two minutes to play before the Lady Mounties pulled away.
Erica Lockhart led Clay-Chalkville with 11 points on the night and was one of three seniors for the team. Johnson and Tamerria Tatum are the other two seniors. The Lady Cougars finished the year with a 15-12 record.
Clay-Chalkville’s boys basketball team fell to Huffman 68-63 last Tuesday in the sub-regional round, ending the Cougars season with a 14-15 overall record. In the game, Daniel Beachem led the Cougars with 20 points, while Jaylin Mack had 18 points and Dayon Bryant scored 11.
Pinson Valley
The Pinson Valley boys basketball team kept its season alive on Tuesday night, as the Indians prevailed 61-50 in overtime over Homewood in the Class 6A Northeast Sub-Regional. The Indians held a consistent edge in the first half, with a 15-8 lead after a quarter of play and a 22-16 edge at the halftime break.
Homewood rallied out of the locker room in the third quarter and tied the game at 24-24 midway through the third quarter with a Logan Padgett dunk. The Patriots took a 29-26 lead into the fourth quarter after Jack Dorough’s 3-pointer.
In the fourth quarter, Pinson Valley extended the lead back to six points, but the Patriots rallied in the final minute and forced overtime on a Larkin Williams coast-to-coast layup that left his fingers just before the horn. But Pinson Valley scored the first eight points of overtime and cruised to the 61-50 win.
