Hewitt-Trussville
The Hewitt-Trussville girls basketball team kept its season alive on Wednesday evening by surviving an upset bid from Vestavia Hills in the opening round of the Class 7A, Area 6 tournament. The Lady Huskies took the lead midway through the final period and held on for a 59-53 win.
Hewitt held a 13-10 edge after a quarter of play, and Vestavia flipped that it into its own three-point lead, 28-25, at the half. Hewitt-Trussville held a slim 41-39 edge after the third quarter, but the Lady Rebels started the final period on an 8-2 run to give them a 47-43 lead. Hewitt responded with its own 9-2 run to reclaim the lead and held on with solid free throw shooting in the final moments.
Three Lady Huskies scored in double figures, led by Amiya Payne’s 17 points. Morgan Kirk added 15, and Leah Harrison scored 14 points.
The Lady Huskies fell to Spain Park 55-48 on Friday night in the area tournament final. In the contest, Kirk led the team with 17 points, while Payne had 13 points. Hewitt-Trussville will take its 18-10 record to the Class 7A Northwest Regional semifinal, where the Lady Huskies will face Austin on Thursday at noon at Wallace State Community College.
Hewitt-Trussville’s boys basketball team saw its season come to an end on Thursday night, as the Huskies fell to Mountain Brook 78-51 in the opening round of the Class 7A, Area 6 tournament. The Huskies finished the season with a 9-15 record in Jeff Baker’s first season as head coach. They will graduate seniors Jaxon Hunter and Sam Cork.
Clay-Chalkville
The Clay-Chalkville boys basketball team won in the opening round of the Class 6A, Area 12 tournament last Tuesday, as the Cougars picked up a 68-41 win over Pell City. The win locked up the Cougars’ spot in the 6A sub-regional round. Dayon Bryant scored 18 points to lead the team, with Jake McDaniel adding 14 points and Jaylin Mack scoring 10.
Pinson Valley’s boys basketball team knocked off Clay-Chalkville 73-56 on Thursday night in the Class 6A, Area 12 tournament final. Kam Woods was named tournament MVP after he poured in 24 points and five assists. Mack led Clay-Chalkville with 16 points, and Bryant added 14 points. Pinson’s Marques McConico had 13 points, as he knocked down 3-of-4 3-pointers. GaQuincy McKinstry added 11 points and four assists, while Horace Wilson had eight points and 12 rebounds.
The Cougars will travel to Huffman on Tuesday night in the sub-regional round.
Clay-Chalkville’s girls won the area tournament for the fifth time in six years in their 42-39 win over Pell City on Thursday night in the Class 6A, Area 12 tournament final. The win secured the Lady Cougars a home game in the sub-regional round this week. Monika Johnson earned tournament MVP honors, while Aukeivah Tellis and Cheyenne Pearson were also named to the all-tournament team.
The Lady Cougars host Shades Valley on Monday night in the sub-regional round.
Pinson Valley
The Pinson Valley girls basketball saw its season come to a close last Tuesday, as the Lady Indians fell to Pell City 43-31 in the opening round of the Class 6A, Area 12 tournament. They got off to a fast start and held a 10-9 lead after the first quarter, before Pell City put together a second-quarter surge and held a slim 20-19 edge at the halftime break.
Pell City came out fast in the third quarter, kept the Lady Indians at arm’s length for much of the period and took a 31-24 lead into the final quarter, when the Panthers effectively put the game away.
Ashly Robinson and Kaitlyn Ambrose scored six points each for Pinson Valley to lead the team. Ambrose and Barryonna White were the team’s two seniors and will graduate in the spring. The Lady Indians finished the year with a 5-21 record in head coach Sara Halasz’s third season.
