Hewitt-Trussville
The Hewitt-Trussville basketball teams opened up Class 7A, Area 6 play last week with a pair of contests.
On Tuesday, the Huskies hosted Vestavia Hills. The Lady Huskies began the evening with a 75-40 win. Amiya Payne poured in a game-high 23 points, and Leah Harrison scored 20 points. Morgan Kirk scored 14 and Erica Jones added 10 to join them in double figures. Vestavia’s boys pulled out a 61-49 win over Hewitt. Colin Glover led the Huskies with 13 points in the game, and Jaxon Hunter added 11.
The Lady Huskies were edged out by Spain Park 59-54 on Friday night. Spain Park’s Sarah Ashlee Barker led all scorers with 29 points, and Payne led Hewitt with 22 points. Kirk scored 13 points. The boys team lost 62-61 at the buzzer after mounting a second-half comeback. Hewitt trailed by 15 at halftime but rallied to take the lead in the final moments, before Spain Park’s Chris Workman hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to win. Cameron Glover led all scorers with 19 points, and Jacolby Thomas added 17 points.
The girls team is now 12-7 on the year with a 1-1 mark in area play, while the boys are 6-10 and 0-2. This week, the Huskies take to the road, at Mountain Brook on Tuesday and Vestavia Hills on Friday, as area play continues.
Clay-Chalkville
The Clay-Chalkville basketball teams were back on the court last week, continuing Class 6A, Area 12 play and playing another non-area opponent.
On Tuesday, the Lady Cougars notched a 56-24 win over crosstown foe Pinson Valley. The boys team fell 71-63, as eight players in the game notched double-figure point totals. Pinson’s Kam Woods led all scorers with 33 points, but Chance Armstrong (15), Daniel Beachem (13), Jaylin Mack (13) and Cameron Ware (12) all accomplished the feat for the Cougars.
Clay-Chalkville traveled to Oxford on Friday, and the girls came away with a 64-48 win. The boys team fell 69-44 after being within six points at the halftime break. Beachem led the team with 17 points.
The boys team is now 9-10 and the girls are 10-9, with both teams holding a 1-1 mark in area play. This week, the Cougars host area foe Pell City on Tuesday and travel to Gardendale on Thursday.
Pinson Valley
The Pinson Valley basketball teams were back in action last week. On Tuesday, the Indians played crosstown foe and Class 6A, Area 12 opponent Clay-Chalkville. The girls fell 56-24, but the boys picked up a 71-63 win. Kam Woods led all scorers with 33 points and added four rebounds and four assists. GaQuincy McKinstry had 12 points, four rebounds and three assists, while Geordon Pollard tallied 10 points and five blocks. Horace Wilson continued his strong play on the glass, going for six points, 10 rebounds and three steals.
On Thursday, the Indians played at Midfield. The girls fell 58-49 in the first game, and the boys picked up an 80-58 win in head coach Darrell Barber’s first game against his former squad. Woods went for 27 points, nine rebounds and three blocks to lead the way. McKinstry chipped in 18 points, six boards and two steals; Marques McConico had 14 points and three rebounds; and Pollard had 10 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks.
The boys team is now 14-5 on the year and 2-0 in area play, while the girls are 4-15 and 0-2. This week, the girls host Hueytown on Wednesday, and both teams head to Center Point on Thursday.
