NORTHPORT -- A sluggish first half turned into an explosive second half, as the Hewitt-Trussville High School football took down Tuscaloosa County 50-18 on Friday night in a Class 7A, Region 3 matchup.
Tuscaloosa County (1-3) put the first points on the board with a short field goal in the final minute of the opening quarter.
But Hewitt-Trussville (4-0, 2-0 in region) got on the board midway through the second quarter, two plays after a Connor Thomas interception. With the short field, the Huskies capitalized and scored on Cade Ott Carruth's 6-yard run to make it 7-3.
Jackson Holland picked off a pass in the second quarter, but the score remained 7-3 at the halftime break.
The Huskies turned things up a notch in a big third quarter, as they found the end zone four times to run away with the game. Armoni Goodwin scored three of those touchdowns in the quarter, with scoring runs of 10, 7 and 69 yards.
Michael Edwards' interception led to a Holland touchdown run to make it 35-10.
In the fourth quarter, Edwards picked off another pass and returned the interception 29 yards for a touchdown and Sean Jackson added a touchdown run.
For the game, Carruth completed 11-of-18 passes for 104 yards. Goodwin led the charge on the ground, going for 204 rushing yards on 18 carries. Jackson finished with 97 yards on eight carries.
Next Friday, Hewitt-Trussville hosts Thompson in what will likely be a matchup of the top two teams in Class 7A.
