TRUSSVILLE – One play can change the trajectory of a game, and that was evidenced on Friday night.
Hewitt-Trussville High School head coach Josh Floyd decided to go for the touchdown and the lead on fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line, but Thompson’s Damonte Tabb turned it into a Thompson touchdown instead.
Tabb’s 99-yard interception return extended Thompson’s lead and gave the Warriors the momentum needed to take a 34-12 victory on Friday night at Hewitt-Trussville Stadium in a matchup of unbeaten squads in Class 7A, Region 3 play.
“The fourth down call is my fault,” Floyd said following the game. “We should’ve taken the points and hope we tied it at 13-13. That one’s on me.”
Hewitt-Trussville took the ball to begin the third quarter trailing 13-10, and marched down the field effectively. A short field goal could have tied the game, but the Huskies were so close they went for the touchdown.
But Tabb jumped in front of a pass toward the side of the end zone, caught it and was off to the races.
Thompson pulled away to improve to 5-2 overall, 4-0 in region play.
The loss is Hewitt-Trussville’s first of the season, as the Huskies are now 6-1 overall and 3-1 in region. Hewitt-Trussville ascended to No. 1 in this week’s Alabama Sports Writers Association poll for the first time since 1991, but that tenure will be short-lived.
“I thought our guys played their hearts out tonight,” Floyd said. “These guys are a close-knit group, they’ve been playing together for a long time. This one definitely hurts, but I’m proud of our guys’ effort.”
The teams exchanged field goals in the opening quarter. Hayden Farrell had just enough leg on a 45-yard effort to put the Huskies on the board, and Thompson’s Ethan Black responded with a 25-yard field goal to make it 3-3.
The Warriors scored on the opening play of the second quarter, as Trent Seaborn hit Pryce Lewis for a 14-yard score. Seaborn’s passing ability was the story of the evening for Thompson’s offense, as the Warriors continually connected on short swing passes, leading to a highly efficient offensive performance.
Seaborn finished the night 33-of-40 passing for 321 yards and two scores. The Huskies held Thompson to only 52 rushing yards, but the passing game was more than enough.
Black hit another field goal, this one a 35-yarder, to extend Thompson’s lead to 13-3. But on Hewitt’s final drive of the first half, Dylan Cope leapt over two Warriors defenders to secure Jack Floyd’s pass in the end zone. The 15-yard touchdown cut the deficit to 13-10 at the half.
Even though Hewitt-Trussville’s 16-play drive to start the third quarter resulted in Thompson points, the Huskies defense had an answer. A punt pinned the Warriors at their own 2-yard line, and Woogie Crawford tackled Reginald Evans in the end zone for a safety, making the score 20-12 midway through the third quarter.
The Huskies only crossed midfield once more, though, and Seaborn connected with Trey Knight on a 14-yard touchdown pass along with running for a 3-yard touchdown to make it 34-12.
Knight was Thompson’s leading receiver, going for 98 yards on seven catches. Lewis had seven grabs for 70 yards.
Jack Floyd finished the night 11-of-21 passing for 148 yards, in addition to running for 27 yards. Deuce Alston finished with 42 rushing yards, while James Kelly put forth 96 total yards. CJ Davis had 26 rushing yards and 29 receiving yards, while Cope finished with 56 yards on seven catches.
Zach Benedict, the starting quarterback at the outset of the season, played for the first time since suffering an injury. He played a couple of drives, and Josh Floyd said he will continue to play more as he gets back into the swing of things.
Both teams remain in region play next week. Hewitt-Trussville travels south to play Prattville, while Thompson hosts Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa.
“It’s a challenge,” Josh Floyd said. “We’ve got to learn from this. It’s the first time we’ve had to do it. We’ve got a good group, a good senior class that’s been through a lot of battles together; hopefully we get another shot at these guys some time.”
