TRUSSVILLE -- A dominating performance on both sides of the ball propelled the Hewitt-Trussville High School football team (2-0) to a 41-0 victory over Saraland (0-2) on Friday night.
“In today’s game, it’s very difficult to hold your opponent to a zero,” Hewitt-Trussville head coach Josh Floyd said. “You don’t see that very much because offenses are so good right now. Our defense played incredible and I am really proud of them.”
Like the coach said, his Huskies defense shined all night long, holding Saraland to just 195 total yards, with only 35 of those coming via the rushing attack. Hewitt-Trussville forced six Spartans turnovers, intercepting three passes, recovering two fumbles and forcing a turnover on downs.
Senior quarterback Cade Carruth passed for 254 yards while completing 16-of-26 passes and throwing two touchdowns, both to Auburn commit Omari Kelly.
The Huskies run game burst onto the scene on Friday as well, as Hewitt-Trussville racked up 199 rushing yards and three scores on the ground.
Hewitt-Trussville started the game off with smoldering pace, scoring on the first drive of the contest on an eight-play drive that took just 1:53 and covered 79 yards. Carruth capped the drive with a 41-yard touchdown pass to Kelly, giving the Huskies a 7-0 advantage early.
On the last play from scrimmage of the first quarter, Connor Thomas found the end zone from 4 yards out to complete another 79-yard drive, this time in 10 plays, taking up 3:40 and putting the Huskies up 14-0.
Both defenses came alive in the second quarter, with Hewitt-Trussville forcing two Spartan turnovers, the first a forced fumble and recovery by senior defensive tackle Justice Finkley and the second an interception by junior defensive back Rickey Gipson. Saraland ended another Husky scoring threat with a forced turnover on downs with nine seconds remaining in the half.
The second half began almost identically to the first in regard to the Hewitt-Trussville offense, as Carruth hit a wide-open Kelly in the middle of the field to go up 21-0 with just over 10 minutes to go in the third quarter.
After the Huskies defense forced the Spartans to punt, Thomas notched his second score of the game from 18 yards out before James Hammonds padded the Hewitt-Trussville lead with a 4-yard touchdown rush with 2:35 left in the third. The Huskies led 35-0 after three quarters.
The fourth quarter saw Hewitt-Trussville offense chew clock, and with 3:25 left, the Huskies capped their longest scoring drive of the game, both in plays and time, with a 7-yard score by Kennedy Mitchell for the final 41-0 tally.
“Turnovers ended up being the biggest key,” Floyd said. “We were able to make the plays we needed to in order to shift the momentum. At 21-0, it was still kind of tight, but at 28-0, I could really feel the momentum start swinging our way.”
Hewitt-Trussville is now 23-10 in non-region games under Floyd.
The Huskies return to the gridiron next Friday as they play host to Spain Park in a Class 7A, Region three contest at Hewitt-Trussville Stadium.
