PRATTVILLE – Hewitt-Trussville High School did not have any intentions of creating chaos in Class 7A, Region 3.
But chaos has entered the chat, so to speak, after Prattville upset Hewitt-Trussville 24-21 on Friday night at Stanley-Jensen Stadium.
With the result, Hewitt-Trussville and Prattville are among the four teams with identical 3-2 region records with two region games remaining.
The Huskies looked like one of the state’s best teams over the first six weeks of the season, rolling to a 6-0 start. But a loss to Thompson last week was followed by a disappointing performance against the Lions on Friday.
“We just didn’t play very well tonight,” Hewitt-Trussville head coach Josh Floyd said following the game. “It wasn’t just one or two plays, there are a lot of different plays throughout the game that we just didn’t get done. I’m really disappointed in how we played.”
It seemed as if Hewitt-Trussville was going to overcome a bit of a sluggish start. The Huskies scored late in the first half, as Jack Floyd hit tight end Jackson Martin for a 10-yard score to give them a 7-3 lead.
But that edge wouldn’t even hold until the halftime break. Hewitt got the ball back but was forced to punt, and Prattville’s Eric Townsend was in the right place at the right time, intercepting a pass after a mishandled snap and running into the end zone to give Prattville the 10-7 edge at the break.
The teams exchanged touchdowns in the third quarter, with Hewitt-Trussville cutting the deficit to 17-14 on CJ Davis’ 14-yard touchdown run.
But a Huskies punt went horribly wrong yet again in the fourth quarter, as a Prattville player pounced on a loose ball in the end zone to score a touchdown to make it 24-14.
Hewitt-Trussville put together a 15-play, 91-yard drive late, scoring on Deuce Alston’s run. But the Lions ran out the clock from there and punctuated a signature win under first-year head coach Bobby Carr.
Tristin Blackmon was the star of the show for Prattville, carrying the ball 31 times for about 120 yards. Sophomore Will McKay played a strong game at quarterback, completing 17-of-29 passes for 216 yards and a score. Donovan Brown finished with 94 receiving yards and Deshawn Hall had 73 yards.
Floyd thought his defense performed well as a whole on the evening.
“Our defense gave up 10 points,” Floyd said. “When your defense gives up 10 points, you ought to win a ball game.”
Zach Benedict got the start at quarterback for the Huskies, as he’s still working his way back from a Week 2 injury. Jack Floyd played the majority of the game, though, finishing 13-of-17 passing for 129 yards. He also rushed for 93 yards.
Dylan Cope was the Huskies’ leading receiver, catching six passes for 78 yards. James Kelly had 42 yards on six grabs.
Hewitt-Trussville still has plenty of opportunity to right the ship over the next two weeks, as the Huskies wrap up the regular season with Oak Mountain and Tuscaloosa County.
“You’ve got to stick together as a team,” Josh Floyd said. “There’s going to be a lot of naysayers, a lot of fingers pointing. We have to stick together as a group.”
With the dust settled on Week 8, Vestavia Hills and Hoover also have 3-2 records in the region. Hillcrest sits at 2-3 as well. There is plenty to be decided over the next two weeks.
