PINSON – Hewitt-Trussville High School got touchdowns from four different quarterbacks and breezed to a 59-7 win at Pinson Valley on Friday night.
The Class 7A sixth-ranked Huskies got touchdowns from seven different players en route to their highest points total since scoring 62 against Huffman last season.
Starting quarterback Noah Dobbins rushed for two first-half touchdowns, backup Parker Floyd threw a touchdown pass to Dylan Cope, Zach Benedict rushed for a 40-yard touchdown, and Jake Lowery’s first pass resulted in a 33-yard touchdown to Jackson Martin.
“I thought all four guys did good things for us,” said Hewitt-Trussville head coach Josh Floyd. “We’re blessed at that position to have some good players, and I was proud of our QBs tonight.”
Hewitt-Trussville’s first touchdown came from running back Deuce Alston, who scored on a 1-yard run early in the first quarter. Dobbins followed with runs of 5 and 25 yards, sandwiched around Floyd’s pass to Cope and a 31-yard field goal by Hunter Curtis. Steven Fisher’s 7-yard touchdown run gave Hewitt-Trussville a commanding 38-0 halftime lead.
Benedict raced for a 40-yard score early in the third quarter and Lowery’s touchdown to Martin came three offensive snaps later. Pinson Valley (1-5) got its only points when Derrico Freeman connected with Cordae Fuller on a 9-yard touchdown to cut the deficit to 52-7. The Huskies (5-1) got their final points when Daniel Harvey stepped in front of a Freeman pass and took it 55 yards for an interception return touchdown.
“I think we did a good job of coming out here and taking care of business,” Floyd said. “Defensively I thought we played well and didn’t give them much in the run game in the first half. We won the field position battle early on.”
Hewitt-Trussville tallied 437 total yards to just 153 for Pinson Valley. D’ante Seals recovered a fumble for the Huskies, and Ethan Ridley and Harvey notched interceptions. Hewitt-Trussville turned the ball over one time, a Benedict fumble that was recovered by the Indians’ Kaden Edwards.
Dobbins finished 5-of-13 for 76 yards and carried it three times for 47 yards and two touchdowns. Floyd was 6-of-9 for 41 yards and a score. Benedict threw for 60 yards and ran for 67 and a touchdown. Lowery was 3-of-5 for 47 yards and a touchdown.
Pinson Valley takes its bye next week, while Hewitt-Trussville jumps back into Class 7A, Region 3 play at No. 3 Thompson.
“We’ve just got to get better, no matter what happens on Friday night,” Floyd said. “We have to improve. We’ll have to play really well next week.”
