Hewitt-Trussville at Oak Mountain
Hewitt-Trussville's Armoni Goodwin (2) races past the Eagles defense for a score in a road victory at Oak Mountain on Friday night.
BIRMINGHAM — There will be doughnuts in the Floyd house Saturday morning.
The rule at Hewitt-Trussville High School head coach Josh Floyd’s house is that if his third-grader, sixth-grader, and eighth-grader all win their games, and the Huskies win on Friday night, there will be doughnuts waiting for them the next morning. All Floyd brothers scored touchdowns and dad coached the varsity Huskies to a 50-33 win at Heardmont Park on Friday night.
“It was a pretty good week,” Floyd said. “It’s hard to do.”
Getting the win over Oak Mountain in both teams’ Class 7A, Region 3 opener proved that difficulty. The Huskies (3-0, 1-0 in region) wore down the Eagles as the second half moved along.
Sean Jackson was the workhorse, rushing for 128 of his 173 yards in the second half. Armoni Goodwin, before leaving in the fourth quarter with what appeared to be a knee injury, gained 123 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries.
“We make a good combo,” Jackson said. “Thunder and lightning. That’s the duo.”
Floyd agreed.
“I don’t think there’s a better backfield around,” he said. “Those guys are just special backs. They play hard. They block for each other. I wouldn’t want anybody different from those guys.”
Cade Carruth was efficient through the air, completing 21-of-27 passes for 214 yards and one touchdown. He rushed for another. Dazalin Worsham caught 10 passes for 101 yards.
“I think Cade’s done really well,” Floyd said. “I thought he made some big throws again tonight. We had a strong run game for the most part. He made some big throws when he had to. He’s got some good guys to throw to.”
Oak Mountain (1-1, 0-1) never backed down from the high-powered Hewitt-Trussville offense, answering after several Huskies’ touchdowns. After Goodwin ran the opening kickoff back 96 yards for a touchdown, the Eagles responded late in the first quarter when quarterback Evan Smith hit Noah Young for a 21-yard touchdown. Oak Mountain led 7-6 after one quarter.
“Oak Mountain always plays their tails off,” Floyd said. “That’s a good football team, and it’s hard to win region games.”
The Huskies scored four plays later when Carruth pitched to Jackson, who took it 48 yards for the touchdown. Goodwin then broke free for a 44-yard score late in the second quarter, giving Hewitt-Trussville a 22-7 lead. Smith answered for Oak Mountain, diving into the end zone from 2 yards out to close the gap to 22-14 at halftime.
It took Oak Mountain just four plays to score on the opening drive of the third quarter, a 16-yard run by Judah Tait. Goodwin then rushed for his second touchdown to put Hewitt-Trussville up 30-20. Tait bolted for a 58-yard touchdown three plays later, and Goodwin countered with a 5-yard scoring run of his own to give Hewitt-Trussville a 38-27 advantage midway through the third quarter.
Smith barreled his way in for a 1-yard score for Oak Mountain, making it 38-33 heading to the fourth quarter. Jackson scored on a 27-yard run and Carruth iced the game with a 1-yard touchdown to put the game away.
“It was kind of sketchy at the beginning, but we got it fixed in the second half,” Jackson said. “We opened up a bunch of holes.”
For Oak Mountain, Smith completed 6-of-10 passes for 62 yards and a touchdown. He was intercepted in the first half by Trey Washington. Smith rushed 11 times for 69 yards and two scores. Tait tallied 175 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries, while Jonathan Bennett worked his way to 116 yards on 18 carries.
Both teams turn around for key region matchups next week. Hewitt-Trussville travels to Hoover while Oak Mountain hosts Thompson.
“We’ll have to bounce back and get ready for next week,” Floyd said. “It won’t be easy.”
