TUSCALOOSA -- Third-ranked Hewitt-Trussville shut out No. 10 Hillcrest on Friday to move to 5-0 for the first time since the 2017 undefeated regular season. The Huskies collected 357 yards of offense, while holding the Patriots to 123 total yards.
"I saw a lot of grit. That was a grind. The defense was incredible. They're really good offensively. They do a lot of good things. We were able to grind out some points offensively," HTHS Coach Josh Floyd said. "We're a senior-led defense and have some experienced guys who have been in some battles. They came out and shut these guys out. That's pretty amazing. It's the third week in a row with a Top 10 win, and that's hard to do in this league."
Hewitt-Trussville now sits atop the Class 7A, Region 3 standings at 3-0, tied with No. 2 Thompson ahead of their Oct. 3 battle.
The Huskies took a 10-0 lead in the first quarter with a 1-yard TD run by Deuce Alston at the 7:10 mark and a 37-yard field goal by Henry Farrell with 1:42 to play.
De'Narrius Crawford had an interception near midfield late in the second quarter to help preserve the 10-0 shutout at halftime.
Jack Floyd stretched Hewitt's lead, 17-0, with 7:56 to play in the third quarter, scoring a 6-yard QB keeper to his left side. The Huskies took less than two minutes to add some insurance. With 6:19 to play in the game, Floyd found Dylan Cope down the Huskies' sideline for a 46-yard touchdown pass. Nathan Fitz was 3-for-3 on extra points.
Floyd collected 224 yards of total offense, completing 83 percent of his passes (15-of-18) for 170 yards and rushing for 74 yards. Cope finished the night with 74 yards on five receptions, while James Kelly had 71 yards on six catches. Alston had 51 yards on 13 carries.
Hillcrest was led by quarterback Jordan Shambley, who passed for 72 yards (9-of-18) and ran for 31 yards.
HTHS moves out of region play Sept. 26 to host Pinson Valley at Hewitt-Trussville Stadium.
