TRUSSVILLE – Josh Floyd earned his 100th win as head coach at Hewitt-Trussville High School on Friday night, and his team made sure it came against a rival that had given the Huskies fits in recent years, holding off Hoover 40-24 to open Class 6A, Region 3 play.
Floyd was presented with a video after the game featuring congratulatory messages from several of his former players, a moment he called special when asked about the milestone.
"I'm blessed to be here. My family loves it here," Floyd said. "We've had opportunities to do other things for a long time, but this is where God wants us."
Floyd, who has coached at Hewitt-Trussville long enough to have been on the losing end of several close games in this series, said the win carried extra weight given the program's history in the matchup.
"It's great to beat those guys, because we've had some heartbreakers," Floyd said. "I'm glad we kind of got the series going in the right direction here."
On the field, the win was anything but easy. Hoover matched Hewitt-Trussville score for score through a wild first half that saw the Huskies build multiple leads only to see the Buccaneers answer each time, including touchdown runs of 80 yards and 15 yards from Hoover's Paxton Weatherly and Kaleb Freeman. Jack Floyd accounted for three total touchdowns, including two rushing scores, while Daniel Williams added two more rushing touchdowns as Hewitt-Trussville took a 35-21 lead into halftime.
The Huskies took control in the third quarter, coach Floyd said, crediting an improved defensive effort after halftime.
"I thought our defense played a lot better second half," Floyd said. "We probably were set up better to score more in the second half than the first half, but we had some penalties really hurting us, hurting drives."
Bryant Wisdom's interception set up a Rivers Harbison field goal, and a Hoover safety pushed the lead to 40-21 before Hoover added a late field goal to make the final margin 40-24.
Floyd credited a mix of inexperience and hustle for a Hewitt-Trussville roster that includes several first-year starters.
"We got some young guys playing, sophomores and juniors, but also got seniors that, it's their first time being starters," Floyd said. "These guys will play their tails off, though. They love being here."
Hewitt-Trussville improved to 2-1 and travels to Tuscaloosa County next week.
Clay-Chalkville bounced back from its first loss of the year with a 68-0 win over Springville in the Cougars' region opener.
