The Hewitt-Trussville High School baseball and softball teams are moving on in the Class 7A playoffs.
The Huskies softball team finished as the runner-up in Class 7A, Area 6 tournament Monday to advance to the regional tournament.
Vestavia Hills rallied back in the late innings last Saturday to beat Hewitt 8-7, but the Huskies notched a win over Oak Mountain on Saturday evening and avenged the Vestavia loss Monday afternoon to stay alive. Hoover won the area tournament with a 7-2 win over the Huskies in the final.
In the first game of the tournament, Hewitt had opened up a 7-2 lead after four innings, before Vestavia put up six runs over the next two innings to win. Corey Goguts and Erin Coleman hit home runs in the game, each driving in three runs.
Hewitt dispatched Oak Mountain 11-1 in an elimination game later that evening. Zaylen Tucker led the charge from the leadoff spot, racking up three hits and driving in a run. Makaila Hope had a pair of hits and drove in three, while Peyton Hull, Ava Hyde, Evie Andrews and Presley Hull also knocked in a run.
Tucker threw four innings, allowing one run on three hits. Kinley Poe threw a perfect inning to finish off the game.
In another elimination game Monday afternoon, the Huskies never gave Vestavia any hope, winning 8-0. Goguts mashed two more homers among her three hits and finished with three RBIs. Tucker had two hits and two RBIs, Coleman and Presley Hull each knocked in a run. Tucker threw the complete game shutout, capping it off by catching a pop-up for the final out of the game.
Goguts was a bright spot in the championship game, as she homered again to add to her state-leading total of 30 homers on the year.
Hewitt-Trussville will head to the East Regional at Sand Mountain Park in Albertville next week, with play beginning Tuesday morning against Thompson. Tuscaloosa County and Hoover are also in the regional, with the top two teams advancing to state.
Hewitt's baseball team is rolling on as well, sweeping Sparkman in the first round of the Class 7A playoffs last Friday.
The Huskies won the first game 4-0, as Christian Helmers fired a complete game shutout, only surrendering two hits. Cooper Huffman, Cale McIntosh and Colby Durden knocked in runs for the top-ranked Huskies.
The second game was much the same, with Hewitt winning 5-1. Hudson Mitchell took the ball and never gave it up, throwing the complete game and allowing a lone run on two hits, with eight strikeouts. Durden had two hits in the game, including a double. Huffman also doubled and knocked in a run. Koal Duckett and McIntosh also added RBIs.
Hewitt-Trussville will take on Bob Jones in the Class 7A quarterfinals this Friday and Saturday. A doubleheader is set to begin Friday at 4:30 p.m., with a third game Saturday at 1 p.m. if necessary.
