As we approach the end of 2024, we’re taking the time to highlight the best 12 photos that appeared in the Cahaba Sun this year—hoping to illustrate how vibrant life was in Trussville this year along the way.
#12: Husky bowlers compete at state semi-finals

Hewitt-Trussville High School’s girls and boys bowling team both competed in the Class 6A-7A state tournament semifinals this February. This marked the boys team’s second straight appearance in this stage of the tournament. Nate Dodson was the top bowler for the Huskies, finishing fifth overall with a score of 589.

#11: Outdoor summer fun in Trussville

Verna Gates, founder of the Fresh Air Family, led campers as they explored the art of fishing, as portrayed in the Mark Twain novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, using sticks, bamboo cane, fishing line, hooks, and worms.
In July, campers at Fresh Air Family’s Gross Out Camp explored the great outdoors, spending a day on a Huckleberry Finn-like adventure fishing—using sticks, fishing line and hooks and worms—along the Cahaba River in Trussville.
#10: Huskies softball win state title

In May, Hewitt-Trussville High School’s softball team won the Class 7A state title, beating Daphne 1-0. AhKeela Honeycutt was key in this victory, sending the Huskies to a walk-off memory after lacing a double to the left-center field gap and scoring Presley Hull. This victory marked the second straight state title for the Huskies, as well as the fourth state title for the team in the past six years.

Hewitt-Trussville High School celebrated the Class of 2024 on Tuesday May 21 with commencement at Husky Stadium. Mrs. Kim DeShazo, President of Trussville City Schools Board, speaks to graduates.
Graduating seniors at Hewitt-Trussville High School celebrated their accomplishments at their commencement ceremony in May. Graduates and their loved ones gathered at Husky Stadium for a ceremony featuring several speakers, including the president of Trussville City School Board, Kim DeShazo, and student body leaders.

#8: Huskies dominate on the gridiron

There’s no denying that the Hewitt-Trussville High School football team was daunting on the gridiron this fall. The Huskies dominated many of their opponents, ending the season with a 8-3 record, and making an appearance in the first round of the state playoffs.
#7: Trussville’s ‘Momtrepreneurs’ bring new women-owned businesses to Trussville

Taylor Stephens of Pound Fitness and Barbell coaches an athlete while holding baby Jacob on her chest. Pound Fitness offers personal training classes and accomodations for parents and pet owners.
A trend has emerged in Trussville: a slew of young mothers—”momtrepreneurs”—have begun opening small businesses around the city. Even though these women’s businesses differ from one another—ranging from gyms to hair salons, they have banded together in a community of support and collaboration.

#6: Girl Scouts attempt to break s’more world record at Camp Coleman

In October, Girl Scouts and the community gathered at Camp Coleman in order to attempt to break the world record for most people simultaneously roasting s’mores. Trussville area Girl Scouts teamed up with fellow Girl Scouts of North-Central Alabama and Girl Scouts of South Alabama.

#5: Insanitarium offers thrills and chills to scare seekers

Throughout the Halloween season, the Instanitarium haunted attraction, run by Justin McElroy, offered scares to local thrill seekers. Visitors to the Insanitarium can expect to be chilled by the uncanniness of the attraction’s actors—McElroy does not use any animatronics at the Insanitarium.

#4: ‘Just the coolest thing’: Trussville man studies snapping turtles

Andy Coleman, a Trussville man who teaches biology at Talladega College and leads the Urban Turtle Project, has been studying alligator snapping turtles in the Cahaba River. Collaborating with the Cahaba River Society and the Birmingham Zoo, Coleman the Urban Turtle Project seek to understand how the urban footprint of the Birmingham metro area impact the Cahaba’s alligator snapping turtle population.

#3: Trussville teen competes in Paris Paralympics

Team USA’s Zion Redington will compete with Team USA’s Paralympic wheelchair rugby team during the 2024 Summer Paralympics in Paris.
In August, Trussville teen Zion Reddington competed in the Paralympic Games in Paris as a member of Team USA’s wheelchair rugby team. At age 18, Reddington was the youngest member of the team by more than a decade. Team USA won the silver medal, coming up just short of Team Japan at 48-41.

#2: Historic lamps shine again

The historic streetlamps that line the streets of the historic Cahaba Project shone again for the first time in more than 50 years in late September. The Cahaba Homestead Heritage Foundation hosted an event to mark the occasion, inviting Trussville residents to gather to watch the lamps light in front of Cahaba Elementary School.

The Clay-Chalkville High School football team was a force to be reckoned with all fall. The Cougars finished the season with a 9-3 record and made it to the second round of the Class 6A playoffs.
