Four Hewitt-Trussville High School Culinary Academy students this year competed in a statewide competition at NASA Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville.
The students were challenged to create an ethnic entrée that met the strict nutritional requirements for astronauts as well as having the ability to be thermo-stabilized for packaging in space. Fifty-six teams across the country competed for a spot in the top 10.
Hewitt-Trussville students Madeline Curd, Lucy Prince, Kaylie Love and Abigail Mitchell were chosen to compete in the final national competition at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas planned for April 16, but the event was canceled due to COVID-19. Among the panel of judges were astronauts, the American Culinary Federation and scientists from the Johnson Food Lab. These students were awarded scholarships for being chosen as top 10 competitors and have the opportunity to compete for more scholarship opportunities at the national level.
