Work continues on 1-59 through Trussville
I-59 northbound traffic will shift to the left two lanes to allow crews to work on the outside lane.
The Interstate 59 widening project in Trussville has moved into another significant phase.
On May 18, the Alabama Department of Transportation closed both northbound ramps at Exit 141 at Chalkville Mountain Road. During the closure, drivers are not able to enter or exit I-59 northbound at that interchange. Contractor Wiregrass Construction Co. has a 40-day incentivized deadline to reopen the ramps.
The closure is part of the ongoing effort to widen I-59 to three lanes in each direction between Interstate 459 and Exit 141.
When the ramp closure began, northbound traffic on I-59 also shifted to the left two lanes to allow crews to work on the outside lane. That shift affected the movement from I-459 north onto I-59 north, creating a new temporary ramp configuration. ALDOT urged drivers to use caution when navigating the new pattern.
Wiregrass Construction Co. has approximately four months remaining to open the widened northbound lanes in a three-lane configuration and collect a $1 million incentive. The company met both incentivized deadlines last fall when it opened the widened southbound exit ramps and the expanded stretch of I-59 ahead of schedule.
The entire project, valued at $70,377,212.87, is expected to be complete by spring 2027.
