Fishers participate in the first God is Bigger Movement Bass Fishing Tournament in 2018.
The second annual God Is Bigger Movement Bass Fishing Tournament will take place Saturday, Sept. 7, at Lakeside Park in Cropwell. Proceeds from the event support the Trussville-based nonprofit, which was created in 2011 when founder Rachel Shaneyfelt was diagnosed with mesothelioma.
Inspired by Luke 1:37, Shaneyfelt began printing and distributing silicone bracelets imprinted with the message, “God Is Bigger.” More than 450,000 bracelets have since been distributed worldwide to charities, flood and fire victims, strangers and loved ones experiencing difficult circumstances. Missionaries use the bracelets as evangelical conversation starters around the globe.
After her passing in 2017, Shaneyfelt’s friends and family continued the God Is Bigger Movement with the stated intent of “sharing hope in a broken world.”
“Even though the bracelets are available for purchase online, we donate most of them. Our goal is to distribute 150,000 bracelets this year, which costs about $7,500,” said God Is Bigger Movement Vice President Stacey Reed, who also coordinates the tournament.
“Last year was our first tournament, and it was a huge success,” Reed said. “We have the same great sponsors, so for $110 you have breakfast, lunch, entry for over 50 draw prizes and tournament entry.”
In addition to $5,000 in cash prizes, prize drawings at the weigh-in event include custom GIBM bass fishing rods, tools and more. With a minimum of 60 boats registered for competition, the event is approved for tournament rewards from Bass Pro Shops, Triton Gold and America’s First Bass Cash.
