Winn-Dixie has announced it will close its Alabama stores, including the location in Trussville which is being acquired by Food City.
Winn-Dixie will close 18 grocery stores in Alabama — including the location in Trussville — as part of a company-wide move to scale back operations outside Florida.
The closures are part of a broader transition announced by parent company Southeastern Grocers, which said 32 Winn-Dixie stores and eight Harvey’s Supermarkets across four Southern states will be sold or shuttered by early 2026. Four of the affected Alabama stores have already been sold to other grocery companies. That includes the Trussville location at 465 Main St., which has been acquired by Food City.
In a shift focused on its origins, Southeastern Grocers will rebrand as The Winn-Dixie Company and consolidate business operations in Florida.
“This decision allows us to grow where our roots run deepest,” CEO Anthony Hucker said, calling the changes difficult but necessary.
The company has not confirmed who will take over the remaining unsold locations. All transitions are expected to be completed by early 2026.
Founded nearly a century ago, Winn-Dixie has long served as a regional grocery brand known for its neighborhood focus and loyal customer base, particularly in Florida, where it plans to remain.
