Spring sports are fully underway. Here's an update from the past week from several Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley high school teams.
BASEBALL
Pinson Valley
The Pinson Valley High School baseball team fell to Mortimer Jordan, 10-0, in five innings on Monday. The Indians dropped another contest on Tuesday, losing 11-1 to Hewitt-Trussville.
On Saturday, the Indians were swept in a doubleheader. Springville knocked off Pinson Valley, 11-5, and Etowah escaped with a 2-1 victory.
Hewitt-Trussville
The Hewitt-Trussville baseball team took care of Pinson Valley, 11-1, on Tuesday. Davis Burgin hurled a one-hitter with eight strikeouts. Carson Skipper drove in three runs, while Tyler Mauldin and Jacob Bishop each racked up two RBIs. Bishop added two hits as well.
On Saturday, the Huskies shut out Vincent, 6-0. Michael Fowler struck out 12 batters in his six innings of work. Mauldin and Creed Parker drove in runs for Hewitt.
On Friday, the Huskies were swept by Pelham in a doubleheader, 2-1 and 10-5.
SOFTBALL
Clay-Chalkville
The Clay-Chalkville High softball team fell to Spain Park, 13-1, on Tuesday.
Over the weekend, the Cougars competed in Spain Park’s Jag Classic. Clay-Chalkville fell in both of its pool games, a 6-4 loss to Mortimer Jordan and a 9-0 shutout loss against Thompson. Against Mortimer Jordan, Rachel Smith had two hits and an RBI. Jewel Mealing managed a pair of hits against Thompson. The Cougars were eliminated on Saturday in a 7-2 loss to Oak Mountain. Alexis Griffin and Alyssa Butts drove in runs in the game.
Pinson Valley
Pinson Valley’s softball team knocked off Mortimer Jordan, 7-5, on Tuesday. Mollie Peoples’ two-run homer got the Indians on the board in the fourth inning, and Hope Cole went the distance in the circle. Maddie Pliscofsky and Graci Graves each had two hits.
Hewitt-Trussville
The Hewitt-Trussville softball team competed in Spain Park’s Jag Classic over the weekend. On Friday, the Huskies won both of their pool games. In the 3-2 win over Hatton, Molly Cobb notched a hit, while Abigail Dorsett and Hannah Borden picked up a hit apiece. Borden had three hits in the Huskies 13-1 win over Northridge, as she hit a double and two home runs, driving in six runs. Cobb, Anyce Harvey and Tate Moseley each registered two hits and KK Hughes was the winning pitcher.
On Saturday, the Huskies beat Spanish Fort 7-5 before being eliminated by Sparkman in a 5-2 loss. Against Spanish Fort, Crystal Maze hit a home run and drove in five runs in the game, while Harvey knocked in the other two runs. Borden had a pair of hits in the Sparkman loss.
SOCCER
The Hewitt-Trussville girls soccer team shut out Gadsden City on Tuesday night, winning 2-0. Julia Farris and Sarah Mezrano each scored for the Lady Huskies. The boys team picked up a 5-2 win over Gadsden City, as Myles Cornett registered a hat trick and Eric Besse and Colt Smith each added a goal.
The boys team played a tight game with Auburn on Friday, but fell 3-2. Also on Friday, the girls team played Auburn and came away with a 2-0 win. Jordan Lynn scored both goals for the Lady Huskies while Kendall Sedran and AC Russell combined for the shutout.
OTHER
Hewitt-Trussville alumnus and Snead State freshman Cameron Furr was named the ACCC pitcher of the week after he struck out 14 batters with two walks on his way to a 2-0 record and a 0.00 ERA the week of Feb. 19-25.
