HEWITT-TRUSSVILLE
The Hewitt-Trussville High School basketball teams wasted no time in getting going in the new year, as they hosted Pell City on Tuesday night. The girls won easily, 65-41, but a poor showing at the free throw line kept the margin of victory from being more. London Coleman led the Lady Huskies with 17 points, followed by 15 points from Amiya Payne.
The boys team put on a clinic and defeated Pell City, 68-28. Patrick Bishop knocked down a trifecta of 3-pointers on the way to a game-high 17 points. TJ Alexander scored 12 points and Damon Harper added 11 to join Bishop in double figures.
On Friday, the Huskies traveled to Huntsville and pulled off a sweep of their area opponent. The girls won convincingly, 72-34, behind solid performances all the way around. Erica Jones paced the team with 15 points. She was followed closely by Payne’s 14 points and Morgan Kirk’s 13. The Lady Huskies are now 16-2 overall and 3-0 in the area.
Harper poured in 21 points for the boys team, as the Huskies took down Huntsville, 65-46. Jaxon Hunter was also in double figures, with 11 points. Not to be outdone by the girls, the boys team is off to a strong start as well, with a 12-3 record.
This week, the boys host Minor on Jan. 9 before both teams head to Gadsden City on Jan. 12. The Lady Huskies will play at Huffman on Jan. 13 in a Martin Luther King Jr. Day event.
CLAY-CHALKVILLE
The Clay-Chalkville High School basketball teams participated in the Jefferson-Shelby Hoops Classic last week. The boys team opened up their run in the tournament on Tuesday with a dominant 55-18 win over Shelby County. Caleb Toney led his team with 13 points, followed by Nick Howard with 12 points.
Wednesday, the Lady Cougars pulled out a tight 53-50 win over Pleasant Grove to advance to the quarterfinals.
In the quarters on Thursday, the girls grinded out a 39-27 win over Oak Mountain High Schol, as Monika Johnson and Erica Lockhart each led the way with 12 points apiece. The boys also advanced to the semifinals on Thursday, securing a 56-51 victory over Pleasant Grove. In the contest, Caleb Toney posted a double-double, with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Nick Howard joined him in double figures with 10 points.
The girls won their semifinal game, posting a 43-35 win over Minor High School on Friday. The boys didn’t fare as well, falling to Helena High School, 64-19, and ending the week with a 9-9 record.
The Lady Cougars fell to Shades Valley High School, 51-36, in the championship game of the tournament, and now have a 14-5 record.
This week, the Cougars play a pair of road area games. On Jan. 9, they head to Center Point and travel to Gardendale on Jan. 12.
PINSON VALLEY
The Pinson Valley High School girls basketball team took part in the Jefferson-Shelby Hoops Classic last week. The Indians opened their tournament run with a 61-52 loss to Shelby County on Tuesday.
On Thursday, the Lady Indians played much better in a 57-44 win over Chelsea High School. Three players reached double figures for Pinson Valley, with Courtney Whatley scoring a game-high 16 points, Breanna Green adding 15 and Kaitlyn Ambrose chipping in 13.
This week, both Indians teams head to Midfield High School on Wednesday. The girls team will take on Carver-Birmingham at Center Point on Jan. 13.
